IT WAS SUPPOSED to be a routine plea deal. The kind that takes place in courtrooms every day. But when Chad Johnson playfully slapped his attorney on the butt, it caused a judge to slap Johnson with a 30-day jail sentence. Johnson, the former NFL star once known as Chad Ochocinco, was appearing before Broward County (Fla.) Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh to settle a probation violation relating to a domestic violence case. He was on probation after pleading no contest to head-butting his then-wife Evelyn Lozada - of the TV show "Basketball Wives" - during an altercation last August.

A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh accepted Johnson's apology and cut back his jail term for a probation violation from 30 days to the seven days he had served since the rear-swatting. Johnson, a flamboyant receiver formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, said that he'd had time to think about why his flippant attitude was wrong - especially in a domestic violence case.

Chad Johnson showed up for the start of the Cincinnati Bengals' mandatory minicamp yesterday. Beyond that, nothing was clear. The disgruntled receiver didn't participate in the morning workout after telling the team he has an ailment - fittingly, there were conflicting descriptions of what was wrong. After the team asserted that he had refused to practice, Johnson went out for the afternoon workout, caught a few passes during drills, then removed his helmet and covered his head with a white towel, a signal that he was done.

The fallout from Chad Johnson's domestic abuse arrest continues. The New York Times reported Monday that VH1 has shelved a reality show the channel had filmed over the last several months titled Ev & Ocho. The show chronicled the marriage of Johnson to his wife Evelyn, and was set to air its first episode on Sept. 3. According to a statement from the network, there are no longer any plans to air the show. Evelyn Johnson herself was already something of a reality TV star after her role on Basketball Wives, where she starred, thanks to having been married to NBA forward Antoine Walker.

CHAD "Ochocinco" Johnson unknowingly prevented a woman from taking her life. Earlier this week, the former NFL wide receiver left a waitress a $300 tip for a $351.92 tab. He signed his name on the credit card slip and added the following message: "Sundays are slow, this should help. I love you. " He then posted a photo of the receipt and the message on Twitter. What happened next was incredible. Another woman, who Johnson had never met, sent him a direct message saying she was considering suicide until she read about his generosity.

Six weeks after proclaiming he would not report to any Cincinnati Bengals activities, disgruntled wide receiver Chad Johnson seems to have had a change of heart. Yesterday, he told ESPN The Magazine that he intends to report to mandatory minicamp on June 12 and that that everyone will see "the reinvention of Ocho Cinco. " "I'm dead serious," Johnson said. "People need to take me as I am because I just don't give a [bleep] anymore. That's how I'd sum up my attitude for the next season.

Johnson had reached a plea deal with prosecutors for community service and counseling to resolve a probation violation from his no-contest plea last year to battery on his then-wife, TV star Evelyn Lozada. Before granting the deal, McHugh asked Johnson if he was satisfied with his attorney. The former NFL receiver responded by slapping Adam Swickle on the butt and the courtroom erupted in laughter.

POOR CHAD JOHNSON. Earlier this month he was cut by the Miami Dolphins. And on Thursday, he found out he'd been cut by Madden 13 too. "That awkward moment when you realize you're not on Madden13 and have to create yourself . . . " Johnson tweeted to his followers. Actually, the athlete formerly known as Chad Ochocinco is part of Madden 13. He has just been moved to the free-agent pool. In a somewhat related story, the Dolphins seem hell-bent on signing a receiver familiar with the arrest process.

Before Damaris Johnson could join the Eagles, his coach needed to turn detective. Johnson's path to Philadelphia started when general manager Howie Roseman approached special teams coordinator Bobby April in February about a prospect from Tulsa who didn't play his senior year of college football. April watched footage from 2010 and concurred with Roseman's evaluation of Johnson: "Big-time talent. " Roseman then added a caveat that set Johnson apart from the reels of other prospects April would scout.

JASON WITTEN is going to have to get used to not doing much of anything if he wants to play in the season opener next month. Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday that his Pro Bowl tight end sustained a "slightly lacerated" spleen in the preseason opener Monday night against Oakland. The best way for Witten to heal is to remain as inactive as possible. "It's a very serious injury and we're really taking this thing day by day," Garrett said. "He has to be very still and idle for the next week to 10 days, so you won't see him out here on the practice field.
