KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Chad Ochocinco will try to play a different kind of football during the NFL lockout. Never short on publicity-grabbing ideas, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver is set for a 4-day tryout with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer, starting Tuesday. The club said yesterday that after the tryout, it would determine whether to extend the trial period. Ochocinco started playing soccer at age 4 but chose to focus on football in high school. "Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said.

CHAD JOHNSON'S lawyer asked Broward County (Fla.) Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh to reconsider the 30-day jail sentence she imposed Monday. Johnson had reached a plea deal with prosecutors for community service and counseling to resolve a probation violation from his no-contest plea last year to battery on his then-wife, TV star Evelyn Lozada. Before granting the deal, McHugh asked Johnson if he was satisfied with his attorney. The former NFL receiver responded by slapping Adam Swickle on the butt and the courtroom erupted in laughter.

ON WEDNESDAY, CHAD Ochocinco sent out a tweet urging his followers on Twitter to try the new cereal named after him. The Bengals receiver wrote: "Start your day with a lil suga!!!" Unbeknownst to Chad, an incorrect phone number on the cereal boxes put consumers in touch with the wrong kind of "suga. " The number was supposed to connect callers to the Feed the Children charity. Instead, it hooked them up with a phone-sex line. The Kroger Company, based in Cincinnati, pulled the cereal boxes from shelves yesterday.

APPARENTLY, Giants rookie linebacker Greg Jones isn't satisfied with a Super Bowl ring. He wants a wedding band, too. Jones was still on the field after Sunday night's win over the Patriots when he dropped to one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Amanda, who immediately said yes. "She was bawling," Jones told the Associated Press yesterday. "I was like, 'I don't know how long she's going to keep crying.' " Jones, a sixth-round pick out of Michigan State, said he had practice-squad teammate Christian Hopkins hold the engagement ring for him during the game.

IT WAS SUPPOSED to be a routine plea deal. The kind that takes place in courtrooms every day. But when Chad Johnson playfully slapped his attorney on the butt, it caused a judge to slap Johnson with a 30-day jail sentence. Johnson, the former NFL star once known as Chad Ochocinco, was appearing before Broward County (Fla.) Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh to settle a probation violation relating to a domestic violence case. He was on probation after pleading no contest to head-butting his then-wife Evelyn Lozada - of the TV show "Basketball Wives" - during an altercation last August.

CHAD OCHOCINCO has lost it - again. The week that is Ochocinco - and it's only Thursday - features the Bengals receiver threatening to send mustard to the Steelers in advance of their AFC Divisional clash this weekend. "I got a nice present for the Steelers - sending them some mustard since they'll never ketchup when we play Sunday," he posted on his Twitter site. That idea was quickly shot down by Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, who perhaps is still stewing over No. 85's decision to mail deodorant to the Baltimore Ravens before their meeting last Sunday.

When Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco takes the field against the Patriots Sunday, he will see two people who don't follow him on Twitter: Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and Patriots counterpart Bill Belichick. "I don't follow him because it's just a bunch of nonsense," Lewis told the Associated Press yesterday. "I don't really care where he goes to eat and so forth, or who he buys dinner for. But I guess [for] a lot of people, that gives them something to do during the day. I have no problem filling my day up. " Belichick, who has kept in contact with Ochocinco since the two met at a Pro Bowl, isn't into tweet nothings either.

A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh accepted Johnson's apology and cut back his jail term for a probation violation from 30 days to the seven days he had served since the rear-swatting. Johnson, a flamboyant receiver formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, said that he'd had time to think about why his flippant attitude was wrong - especially in a domestic violence case.

Are you ready for some football? In the fall, always, but this weekend even more so after seeing Half Straddle's In the Pony Palace/Football , a fast, funny romp and stomp all over the gridiron on stage this final week of the 2014 Fringe Festival. Half Straddle parodies the game, sports movies made for boys (grown or otherwise), and the attitudes of players at all levels - current, retired, or still scoring touchdowns in their own minds. Statistics become "likes and dislikes," the coach yells "Don't leave anything on the field!"

DAVIE, Fla. - For Chad Johnson, a weekend confrontation with his wife has led to repercussions beyond a misdemeanor charge and NFL unemployment. VH1 pulled from its schedule the reality series "Ev and Ocho," starring newlyweds Johnson - formerly known as Chad Ochocinco - and Evelyn Lozada. The network announced the move Monday, citing "the seriousness of the allegations" against Johnson, and said it had no plans to air the show. The Dolphins terminated Johnson's contract Sunday night, about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Wednesday indicated that he has a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, an injury he sustained in November playing against the Ravens. "I'm good. It's OK, just sore," Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I have a little torn rotator cuff. That doesn't heal. We just have to hope it doesn't tear the rest of the way. " Roethlisberger said his arm is strong and the injury isn't limiting him. He is, however, taking measures to protect the shoulder, including cutting out throwing during walk-throughs.

CINCINNATI - Jerome Simpson's heels-over-head touchdown still has the Bengals flipped out. The fourth-year receiver pulled off the defining play of his career on Saturday, vaulting over an Arizona linebacker and landing on his feet in the end zone during a 23-16 victory. Teammates were awed by the way he stuck the landing and raised both arms like a triumphant gymnast. His coach? Not so thrilled. Marvin Lewis said yesterday that Simpson could have taken a much easier and less risky route to the end zone.

Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 10 of the 2011 season.   Watch 'em roll Tim Tebow, QB, Broncos at Chiefs. I don't know any leagues that award style points, so Tebow's unconventional approach to racking up fantasy production is irrelevant.
