A RIGHT ANKLE injury will keep Soul linebacker Beau Bell out of today's game against visiting Portland. Bell sprained his ankle during Sunday's win at New Orleans, and coach Clint Dolezel said Bell will miss at least two games. The Soul got a spell of good news, as leading receiver Marco Thomas was back to full practice on Thursday. Thomas, the league's receiver of the year last season with Iowa, missed last week's game with a hamstring injury. Tonight's game Who: Portland (2-3)

NOBODY KNOWS better than Phillies fans how debilitating a torn Achilles' tendon can be to an athlete. Ryan Howard hasn't been the same since 2011. Soul wide receiver Ryan McDaniel tore his right Achilles' in the middle of last season. He has rebounded to become one of the best receivers in the Arena League. "There was never a doubt that he would come back and be full strength by training camp," coach Clint Dolezel said emphatically. "Never a doubt. " In fairness to Howard, McDaniel was 25 and in his second AFL season when he was hurt, while Howard was 31 and finishing his 10th professional baseball season.

THE MOST successful Tiger in the sporting world yesterday was not Eldrick Woods down at Augusta, but Anthony "Tiger" Jones. The former Soul wideout came back to town with the Jacksonville Sharks to haul in five touchdown passes and total 13 receptions for 239 yards. But the rest of the gang from North Florida couldn't match Jones' homecoming effort, as the Soul (3-0) topped the Sharks, 63-52, in front of a crowd of 9,043 at the Wells Fargo Center. Jones spent the previous three seasons in Philly, racking up 119 scores during his tenure before flying south for a 1-year deal with Jacksonville (0-3)

IN THE REALM of arena football, what the Soul did this offseason was comparable to the Eagles' trading LeSean McCoy. Following a mediocre season and first-round playoff loss, the Soul traded Derrick Ross, easily the best fullback in franchise history and largely considered to be the best the AFL has ever known. Traditional running backs are called fullbacks in the arena league. In return, the Soul received a stud linebacker - sound familiar, Eagles fans? - in this case Beau Bell, who was first-team all-AFL for Los Angeles last year.

THE SOUL re-signed quarterback Dan Raudabaugh to a 2-year contract, the Daily News has learned from a league source. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Raudabaugh, the team's offensive leader the last three seasons, represents the first key player to rejoin the club. He has an extensive relationship with head coach Clint Dolezel. Dolezel was re-signed in September, also for two seasons. The Soul went a disappointing 9-9 this past season and was eliminated by Cleveland in the first-round of the playoffs.

CALLING IT an easy decision, Clint Dolezel re-signed to coach the Soul for another two seasons. "It's hard to beat our ownership, the facilities, the way we're treated," Dolezel said from his suburban Dallas home. "It was a no-brainer on my end. " As the Arena Football League again goes through a tempest of transition, the Soul remains one of the most stable franchises. Reupping Dolezel likely will lead to many of the team's key free agents, most notably quarterback Dan Raudabaugh, being retained.

YOU ARE WHAT your record says you are, and for the Soul that means being stuck in neutral. An awful fourth quarter led to another disappointing loss as the Soul fell to host Tampa Bay on Saturday, 56-49. Philadelphia dropped to 6-6. "We made enough plays to win this game," coach Clint Dolezel said after the game. "But, we have to win the fourth quarter and finish. We didn't do that tonight. " Tampa Bay outscored the Soul, 22-0, in the final quarter to also move to 6-6. The Storm won the season series, 2-1, and now hold the playoff tiebreaker.

ONLY 5 SECONDS remained on the clock for the Philadelphia Soul. After falling behind by one point with 41 seconds left, quarterback Dan Raudabaugh hit Anthony "Tiger" Jones on a 6-yard pitch-and-catch to secure a 60-55 win over the visiting Iowa Barnstormers yesterday. The Soul (3-3) has won its last three games. "That's how arena football goes," Raudabaugh said. "We want the ball last. We got out of bounds when we needed to and made catches. It was a tight one, we have to get better, but it's good to get that first division win. " In front of a live audience on ESPN2 - the first AFL broadcast on an ESPN network since 2008 - the Soul's offense was nearly unstoppable.

DERRICK ROSS' football resumé looks more like a geography syllabus. College ball at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. Pro ball stops include Kansas City with the Chiefs, Cologne (Germany), Montreal, Winnipeg, San Angelo (Texas), Dallas and - beginning in 2012 - Philadelphia. For the second year in a row, he is on the precipice of a title. "I've been playing football since I was 10 years old," the affable Ross explained. "I've never won a championship. This means the world to me. " Ross (6-0, 240)

THE SOUL FUMBLED away a chance to host the conference championship game a few weeks ago with a loss in the regular-season finale. Now, we'll find out if it even mattered. After holding off Orlando on Saturday, Philadelphia will travel to Jacksonville for Saturday's American Conference championship game. The Soul was 7-2 on the road this year, tied for the best road mark in the AFL, and has enough veterans that the hostility of a road playoff game should be mitigated. The Soul beat Orlando, 59-55, in a first-round game on Saturday to get to this point.
