After a back-and-forth struggle, the Soul got revenge on the Jacksonville Sharks on Sunday night at the PPL Center in Allentown, winning the conference championship and advancing to ArenaBowl XXIX. The 55-50 victory left the Soul one win away from their first Arena Football League championship since 2008. Just last season, the Sharks dispatched the Soul, 61-56, in the American Conference final. The Soul (15-3) will take on the Arizona Rattlers on Aug. 26 at Gila River Arena.

ALLENTOWN - Blue-and-black boa around his neck and plastic pigskin hat covering his eyes, Mike Hollenbach leaned over the 5-yard line. "Let's hit these guys hard today," Hollenbach bellowed as Soul players warmed up in front of him. "We're going to play hard today. " Walking the sideline, Ron Jaworski laughed as he shook Hollenbach's hand. "Keep the noise down, my brother," joked Jaworski, the former Eagles quarterback and Soul owner. Hollenbach knows the Soul's owners, players, and coaches.

THE DEMOCRATIC National Convention is two months away, and already it's causing headaches. At least for the Soul. Get a good look at the boys in powder blue. Though they are less than halfway through the regular season, Saturday is the final true home game of the year. And it's a big one. The Orlando Predators (7-0), the last undefeated team in the AFL, come to town holding a one-game lead over the Soul (6-1) in the American Conference. Saturday's winner will gain a significant tiebreaker.

THERE'S ONE team in Philadelphia without a quarterback controversy at the moment. They have the top-ranked offense in their league and a serious shot at bringing a title home to the city. The Soul now sits atop the East Division at 12-3 for the season after defeating the Tampa Bay Storm, 64-42, last night at the Wells Fargo Center. Head coach Clint Dolezel's team appears primed to finish as the top seed in the American Conference and its high-powered offense will look to tear through the playoffs.

ATLANTIC CITY - The Soul's first foray into Atlantic City wasn't a royal flush, but it wasn't snake eyes either. The local arena team hauled its 50-yard field and its own padded walls down the AC Expressway for its first-ever regular-season home game away from the South Philly sports complex. After a sluggish first half, the Soul dispatched Las Vegas, 51-43. But the Boardwalk experiment was more than a football game for the AFL, which is forever trying to nudge its way up to the feeding dish occupied by the more mainstream sports in Philadelphia.

A RIGHT ANKLE injury will keep Soul linebacker Beau Bell out of today's game against visiting Portland. Bell sprained his ankle during Sunday's win at New Orleans, and coach Clint Dolezel said Bell will miss at least two games. The Soul got a spell of good news, as leading receiver Marco Thomas was back to full practice on Thursday. Thomas, the league's receiver of the year last season with Iowa, missed last week's game with a hamstring injury. Tonight's game Who: Portland (2-3)

NOBODY KNOWS better than Phillies fans how debilitating a torn Achilles' tendon can be to an athlete. Ryan Howard hasn't been the same since 2011. Soul wide receiver Ryan McDaniel tore his right Achilles' in the middle of last season. He has rebounded to become one of the best receivers in the Arena League. "There was never a doubt that he would come back and be full strength by training camp," coach Clint Dolezel said emphatically. "Never a doubt. " In fairness to Howard, McDaniel was 25 and in his second AFL season when he was hurt, while Howard was 31 and finishing his 10th professional baseball season.

THE MOST successful Tiger in the sporting world yesterday was not Eldrick Woods down at Augusta, but Anthony "Tiger" Jones. The former Soul wideout came back to town with the Jacksonville Sharks to haul in five touchdown passes and total 13 receptions for 239 yards. But the rest of the gang from North Florida couldn't match Jones' homecoming effort, as the Soul (3-0) topped the Sharks, 63-52, in front of a crowd of 9,043 at the Wells Fargo Center. Jones spent the previous three seasons in Philly, racking up 119 scores during his tenure before flying south for a 1-year deal with Jacksonville (0-3)

IN THE REALM of arena football, what the Soul did this offseason was comparable to the Eagles' trading LeSean McCoy. Following a mediocre season and first-round playoff loss, the Soul traded Derrick Ross, easily the best fullback in franchise history and largely considered to be the best the AFL has ever known. Traditional running backs are called fullbacks in the arena league. In return, the Soul received a stud linebacker - sound familiar, Eagles fans? - in this case Beau Bell, who was first-team all-AFL for Los Angeles last year.
