THE NOW-SHUTTERED Blue Horizon is a marvelous place to watch boxing, but it lacks certain amenities. Despite improvements made to the historic facility in recent years, some fighters still dressed behind bed sheets and hung their street clothes on nails. The Arena in South Philadelphia, formerly known as the New Alhambra, is another gritty, no-frills joint. It is the sort of venue fighters appear in on the way up, or the way down. Welterweight contender Mike Jones knows much of such hardscrabble punching pits, having fought once at the Blue Horizon and 11 times at the New Alhambra.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tony Romo's ribs held up just fine. So did Dan Bailey's leg. Romo persevered through pain to lead enough deep drives to set up Bailey for six field goals, including a 40-yarder with 1:57 left to give the Cowboys an 18-16 victory over the Redskins last night. Dallas' Anthony Spencer chopped the ball from Washington's Rex Grossman with 28 seconds left, and linebacker Sean Lee recovered it, setting off a celebration inside Cowboys Stadium. Dallas coach Jason Garrett dropped to a knee and pumped his fist wildly at being 2-1 - guaranteeing no repeat of last year's miserable 1-7 start.

Jamil Pollard, an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey offensive tackle from West Deptford, said he was going to make an oral commitment to Penn State again after competing in Thursday night's Offense-Defense Bowl, a senior all-star game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Pollard had committed to Penn State during the spring but was later told Penn State couldn't make a commitment to him until he improved academically. Penn State continued to remain in touch.

ARLINGTON, Texas - A week ago, Florida Gulf Coast University was just another overlooked No. 15 seed - a long shot at best to nearly everyone eyeballing their NCAA tournament brackets. Now the Eagles are the high-flying show from "Dunk City" in the Round of 16, the darlings of the South Regional, and a bracket-busting team everybody is talking about even when surrounded by former national champions Michigan, Kansas, and Florida. "Things have changed dramatically," FGCU coach Andy Enfield said.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys came out with a sense of urgency, as though they had something to accomplish. They wound up having a great weekend that put them back in first place in the NFC East. And yet, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is approaching this Saturday's game against the Eagles with trepidation. "Well, after what happened to us in Philadelphia, there's no confidence," Jones said after the Cowboys won at Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

THE HOUSTON Texans are hoping two massive new video screens will help lure the 2017 Super Bowl to Reliant Stadium. The Texans are in the process of installing the video boards, which will be ready for use in Houston's first preseason game in August. Cowboys Stadium in Arlington currently has the biggest screens, and Houston's will be about 30 percent larger than those. The two new boards will have about six times the area as the current video boards and will be placed in each end zone.

The first time Donnie Jones stepped onto the field for warm-ups at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, he did the same thing as every other NFL punter. He kicked the ball at the gigantic video board that hangs over the middle of the field. "I wanted to see if I could hit it," Jones said. The thing cost $40 million, which might be petty cash compared to the $1.15 billion construction cost for the entire stadium, but it's still a $40 million set of TV screens, and every time the Dallas Cowboys have a home game the opposing punter takes a few whacks at it. Just to see. "James Casey actually threw a ball and hit it," Jones said.

Once he completed his media obligations after Villanova's loss to Florida in the finals of the 2006 NCAA Minneapolis regional, Jay Wright entered the locker room at the Metrodome and swelled with pride at seeing how much his players had given in defeat. "It wasn't a bunch of guys sitting around crying," the Wildcats coach recalled a few days ago. "It was guys laying down dehydrated with IVs in their arms. They were just shot. I know it sounds sick, but I just felt so good about our guys and that they played until they had nothing left to give.

I WENT TO SLEEP early on Christmas Eve, which for me is around midnight. I did so, because we were all getting up early to open presents with my grandson Dean, who wakes up around 6. Dean is 18 months old and doesn't fully understand Christmas, but he does love anything and everything about "cars. " When he wakes up, his first word is "car" and, in fact, with the possible exception of "truck" or "bus," that is his entire vocabulary for the day. As usual, I had eaten too much and had a little indigestion as I went to bed. I quickly fell into a deep sleep and began to dream.

BALTIMORE - Landon Donovan played a role in all of the goals for the United States in a 5-1 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal win over El Salvador at a sold-out M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday. The victory sent the Americans on to Wednesday's semifinals at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where they will face Honduras, 1-0, winners over Costa Rica (7 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel/UniMás). It took just over 20 minutes for Donovan to help get the U.S. on the board, feeding a sharp pass to Clarence Goodson for a close-range finish.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Time moves so slowly now. For the Eagles, for all of them, the end cannot come soon enough. The destruction has been wrought, and the smoke floats lazily over the ruins, and the only thing preventing the cleanup from beginning is the four remaining games on the schedule. Time, then. Damn time. The coaches coach for their reputations. The players play for their jobs. There is a nobility to that, even if no one on the outside really cares. People watch these games now out of habit more than anything, and it can be a maddening way to spend 3 hours.
