THERE ARE only two domains of which to choose from these days for fans of the local hockey team. One is the Land of Hope and Dreams, where impossible or highly improbable are vulgarities better left unspoken, where last night's 4-3 shootout victory over the Arizona Coyotes is viewed as another step in a long climb toward a potential playoff berth. The other is Futureland, occupied by those who see too many flaws in the current team to warrant the optimism needed for that other world.

Turning over new Leafs Only six Toronto players who played in last season's opener against the Montreal Canadiens were on the ice Thursday night as the Leafs beat the Canadiens, 3-2, in Toronto in the season opener for both teams. Toronto goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere helped preserve the win by kicking away Andrei Kostitsyn's great chance early and wisely poke-checking the puck off Lars Eller's stick in the third period with his team clinging to a one-goal lead. Giguere also weathered a late storm as the Canadiens pushed for the tying goal, sticking out his left pad to deny Montreal captain Brian Gionta twice from in close.
