When Union midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi talks about last year's game in Los Angeles against the Galaxy, all he sees is red. The Union lost, 3-1, in the May 1 game at the Home Depot Center, dropping their record to 1-4. In that game, Los Angeles owned a 3-0 halftime lead. During the 45th minute, Miglioranzi earned a red card for a hard tackle. "It was my second red card in a 13-year career, and I don't think it will ever happen again," Miglioranzi said. Carlos Ruiz' tone yesterday was of a player who realizes that his experience and skill needs to hold more weight than his words. Already an MLS legend with 82 goals to his credit during time in Los Angeles, Dallas and Toronto, the 31-year-old Ruiz landed in Philadelphia after a 3-year stint in South America, Mexico and Europe. All of a sudden, the team's biggest weakness appears to be a strength, and now it presents a pleasant problem for team manager Peter Nowak during training camp: who to play on defense. It could have an impact on team captain Danny Califf, who started 28 of 30 games last season as a central defender.

While the Union prepare for their inaugural MLS season and the players get to know one another, defender Danny Califf is emerging as one of the team's leaders. That's true even though the concept of a single leader isn't favored by team manager Peter Nowak. The 29-year-old Califf is a member of the U.S national team pool, and he was hoping to get called up to the team's training camp as it prepares for a Feb. 24 friendly against El Salvador in Tampa, Fla. The call never came, although 23-year-old Union defender Michael Orozco has been invited to the camp.
