IT'S A statement game. The fans know it; the coaches and players have said it. Tomorrow night, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., the Union will try to improve to 3-0 when it meets the star-studded Los Angeles Galaxy. A strong performance will further reinforce the notion that all the offseason moves have made this franchise for real. Union capo Peter Nowak, who on Wednesday was made boss of all bosses when he donned the lengthy title of executive vice president of soccer operations, told the press matter of factly that "this is a big game for us. " It's one that will speak volumes given the Galaxy's firepower.

Carlos Ruiz' tone yesterday was of a player who realizes that his experience and skill needs to hold more weight than his words. Already an MLS legend with 82 goals to his credit during time in Los Angeles, Dallas and Toronto, the 31-year-old Ruiz landed in Philadelphia after a 3-year stint in South America, Mexico and Europe. He arrived via free transfer from Greek top-tier club Aris Thessaloniki on Feb. 22 amid scrutiny on whether he still had gas left in his goal-scoring tank, and if he learned to curb comments that previously had gotten him into hot water.

After allowing 49 goals, tied for the second-highest total in Major League Soccer during their inaugural season, the Union addressed the back line with last week's signing of two Colombian national team members, goalie Faryd Mondragon and central defender Carlos Valdes. All of a sudden, the team's biggest weakness appears to be a strength, and now it presents a pleasant problem for team manager Peter Nowak during training camp: who to play on defense. It could have an impact on team captain Danny Califf, who started 28 of 30 games last season as a central defender.

While the Union prepare for their inaugural MLS season and the players get to know one another, defender Danny Califf is emerging as one of the team's leaders. That's true even though the concept of a single leader isn't favored by team manager Peter Nowak. The 29-year-old Califf is a member of the U.S national team pool, and he was hoping to get called up to the team's training camp as it prepares for a Feb. 24 friendly against El Salvador in Tampa, Fla. The call never came, although 23-year-old Union defender Michael Orozco has been invited to the camp.
