Jim Fregosi described Thursday night's 11-inning victory over the Dodgers as a game that had everything. Little did he know. He hadn't seen anything yet. The Phillies made club history, saddened a nation, won a game, 17-4, and, along the way, may have lost their star catcher to an injury Friday night at the Vet. First baseman Gregg Jefferies made the history, becoming the first Phillie in 32 years to hit for the cycle - single, double, triple...

Every morning for the past few weeks, Matt Wilson, 10, would wake up his dad at 6 with a question. "Did Dave call? Did Darren?" Dave would be Dave Daulton, a friend of Matt's dad. And Darren would be Darren Daulton, Phillies catcher - and Matt's idol. The answer - sadly for Matt - would always be "No. " So Matt's dad, Steve Wilson, finally got tired of waiting. "I promised him if Darren was ever in the World Series I'd take him," explained Steve. In the sixth inning of Game 5 - with the Phils leading, 2-0 - Steve Wilson turned to Matt.

Their substitute centerfielder, Rob Butler, lashed three hits, and their new rightfielder, Darren Daulton, easily handled the only fly ball that came his way. Their offense managed the first three-run inning of the season and scored more than three runs for the first time, as well. And still the Phillies lost again. San Francisco scored four sixth-inning runs last night to wipe out a 4-1 deficit and beat the Phils, 8-4, before just 12,099 chilly fans at Veterans Stadium.

Former No. 1 pick Mike Lieberthal will play four or five games a week until Darren Daulton returns to the lineup, manager Jim Fregosi said yesterday. Todd Pratt, Daulton's regular backup, will catch games that are pitched by Danny Jackson or David West, Fregosi said. Daulton is expected to miss six weeks after breaking his right collarbone in the Phillies' game against Florida on Tuesday. Asked if Lieberthal, in essence, was auditioning for the 1995 catcher's job, general manager Lee Thomas said: "Right now, we're not looking at it that way. " Because John Kruk and Ricky Jordan can become free agents after this season, there has been speculation that Daulton might be moved to first base next season.

Spring training starts tomorrow, but for the Phillies, contract season has arrived. They signed relief pitcher Bob Ayrault to a one-year contract yesterday. But that leaves them with 15 players still unsigned. The signing of Ayrault, who appeared in 30 games for the Phillies last season, was one of the easy ones. But the ranks of the unsigned still include Dave Hollins, Mickey Morandini, Tommy Greene, Wes Chamberlain and Juan Bell. And some of those contract battles could go down to the March 4 deadline.

A two-out triple by catcher Jesse Levis in the 11th inning last night scored two Canton-Akron runs, giving the Indians a 3-1 victory over the Reading Phillies in an Eastern League game. The Indians' rally started with two outs when designated hitter Carlos Martinez and first baseman Darrin Epley singled off losing pitcher Frank DiMichele, who pitched the 10th and 11th innings for the Phillies. Darren Daulton, on a rehabilitation assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies, caught for Reading.

WHAT IS it with the Phillies and the big nostalgia weekend for the '93 team that was in the World Series with Toronto? It was nice to see the players - but a whole weekend? Who pays for the fancy hotels for the ballplayers and family members, wives, ex-wives and children? Is it the Phillies or the fans, in the guise of higher ticket and refreshment prices? I heard John Kruk, everybody's favorite working-man's rotund cut-up from West Virginia, use the F-word when standing in the dugout between two pretty boys, Pat Burrel and Darren Daulton, which was bleeped.

For the second year in a row, the Phillies will induct a member of the 1993 National League champions into the team's Wall of Fame. John Kruk is the newest member, the team announced Wednesday. He will be honored before the Aug. 12 game against Washington. He follows Darren Daulton, who was honored last season. They are the only two players from the '93 team to make the wall. So which other players from that beloved squad will be honored? There's Curt Schilling, who is all but a shoo-in.
