The Eagles added to their offseason haul by acquiring wide receiver Arrelious Benn in a trade with the Buccaneers on Friday. They gave up their sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2014 in exchange for the 24-year-old Benn and a seventh-round selection this year from Tampa Bay. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Benn was taken in the second round of the 2010 draft out of Illinois. He has been a disappointment as a receiver, and in three seasons tallied only 59 catches for 862 yards and five touchdowns.

The changes on the Eagles defensive line started two weeks ago when Mike Patterson and Cullen Jenkins were released. Which defensive scheme the Eagles will use has not been disclosed, but the cuts were the first steps of a transition. Expect the Eagles to play a 3-4 or a 4-3 under scheme, which is a hybrid of the 3-4. That means the Eagles need a nose tackle, and they'll have a defensive end/outside linebacker who's primarily a pass rusher but also would drop into coverage. The Eagles have only three sure linemen on the roster: Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, and Antonio Dixon.

The U.S. women's field hockey team routed host Brazil, 6-0, Monday on the first day of the International Hockey Federation's World League Round 2 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, making coach Craig Parnham a winner in his debut with the squad. Mount St. Joseph graduate Katie Reinprecht scored before Katie O'Donnell (Wissahickon High) connected on a penalty corner by redirecting a shot by Rachel Dawson (Eastern). Lauren Pfeiffer (Lenape) finished off the scoring with a goal in the final minutes.

INDIANAPOLIS - Howie Roseman's job right now is to find the kinds of players new coach Chip Kelly needs, building at least a slightly different template than the one the Eagles used for 14 years under Andy Reid. Defining that template is a huge, important undertaking in Year 1 of a regime, and it has been Roseman's focus at the NFL Scouting Combine, as the Eagles' general manager sits every day with Kelly and the rest of the scouting and coaching operation, watching more than 300 prospects work out. "It's a learning process," Roseman said Sunday.

THIS YEAR'S NFL Scouting Combine, which starts Thursday in Indianapolis, is a whole new world for the Eagles. General manager Howie Roseman will be evaluating players alongside a new coach, Chip Kelly, and an even newer player personnel vice president, Tom Gamble. For the first time since Roseman arrived as an unpaid intern in 2000, the Eagles are drafting in the top five - fourth overall, meaning they must concentrate much more than usual on the prospects at the top of the draft.

FORMER EAGLES defensive tackle Hollis Thomas will be an assistant coach for the Soul this season. Thomas, 39, will work with the Soul's defensive line in a part-time capacity that also will allow him to continue as an occasional host for 94WIP radio. "I think it's going to be fun," said Thomas, who played for the Eagles from 1996-2005. "I had a lot of good D-line coaches and it's my duty to try to pass along some of that knowledge. " Thomas made the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Illinois and was a key member of some of those great Jim Johnson-led defenses in the early 2000s.

The relish bottle at the opposite end of the table caught Jerry Azzinaro's attention and made him wonder. Are we feeding our players correctly? Is there too much sodium in that 12.7-ounce container? Is the relish filled with sugar? Only with his players' trust, Azzinaro said, will the Eagles' new defensive line coach find success here. He said his unit needs to trust him in the locker room, on the field, and yes, even in the cafeteria. "I've been married for 32 years and I think trust is the most important thing in a marriage," Azzinaro said Monday at the NovaCare Complex.

WE DIDN'T GET all that much closer to solving the great Billy Davis mystery Monday. Chip Kelly talked about how much he liked his new defensive coordinator when they first interviewed, nearly 2 weeks before Davis' hiring last week, but Kelly said he still wanted to talk with some other people - Kelly apparently unconcerned that this guy he says he wanted to hire had other irons in the fire. Kelly eventually acknowledged that the Eagles sought permission to talk with an assistant from one of the Super Bowl teams, and were denied.

Here is the lowdown on the staff of new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. Notice how many of them have ties to Oregon, where Kelly coached last season: Pat Shurmur, offensive coordinator: In his second tour with the Eagles, he returns after originally spending 10 seasons as the tight ends coach (1999-2001) and quarterbacks coach (2002-08). He most recently served as the head coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2011 to '12. Bill Davis, defensive coordinator: He has 21 years of NFL coaching experience and most recently worked as the Cleveland Browns linebackers coach from 2011 to '12. Dave Fipp, special teams coordinator: Fipp was the assistant special teams coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2011 to '12. Jerry Azzinaro, defensive line/assistant head coach: He served in the same roles on Kelly's staff at Oregon from 2009 to '12. Jeff Stoutland, offensive line: He was Alabama's offensive line coach the last two seasons after spending 14 years as an assistant coach at Miami (2007-10)
