Broncos 31, Steelers 19 DENVER - Peyton Manning made a successful NFL return from a year's sabbatical to lead Denver past Pittsburgh. The four-time MVP coming off four neck surgeries completed 19 of 26 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He got a big assist from another free agent, cornerback Tracy Porter, whose 43-yard interception return of Ben Roethlisberger's pass with two minutes left sealed the win. Manning, jettisoned by the Colts in March after missing all of last season with a nerve injury that weakened his throwing arm, hit Demaryius Thomas with a 71-yard touchdown toss for his first score as a Bronco.

SAN DIEGO - Peyton Manning needed only one half to show why he still is one of the best quarterbacks in the game. This time, it was the second half, as the Denver Broncos became the first team in NFL history to trail by 24 or more points at halftime and win by double figures, downing the San Diego Chargers, 35-24. Manning, who threw a critical interception in the second quarter, finished 24-for-30 for 309 yards and three touchdowns. He was 6-for-6 on the Broncos' first possession after halftime, and hit Demaryius Thomas for Denver's first TD of the game at 10:56, throwing for 83 yards on the drive that made it 24-7.

DENVER - Denver's defense was so dominant in beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that the Broncos even spared tackle Mitch Unrein to help unclog their sputtering offense. When he wasn't catching Peyton Manning's first touchdown pass, Unrein helped build a wall of defenders that slowed down Doug Martin, flustered Josh Freeman and derailed the Bucs in Denver's 31-23 win Sunday. It was the seventh straight win for the Broncos (9-3), who clinched the AFC West title. The Buccaneers (6-6)

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Even while he was trying to tamp down expectations, Peyton Manning could not have envisioned this scene playing out. Three times, the Broncos quarterback dropped back to pass. Three times, he threw into a seam near the numbers down the right side of the field. Three times, a defensive back followed Manning's eyes, cut over and turned whatever small opening the quarterback had seen into an interception. All that in the first quarter alone. Those early interceptions against Atlanta on Monday night matched the most turnover-riddled quarter of football Manning has played in his 15-year career.

WHAT'S THE BIG deal about Peyton Manning throwing seven touchdowns in a game? When George Blanda did it in 1961, he kicked the seven extra points. Now that guy was fantasy gold. Actually, it was nice of Manning to put an end to the Week 1 drama for about 20 percent of the fantasy population. If you have him, you almost surely will win. If you are playing against him, Week 2 can't get here soon enough. The lightning around Denver Thursday night must have struck Manning's right arm at halftime.

Peyton Manning threw his first passes to his newest Broncos teammate Wes Welker during a workout Wednesday at Duke. Welker and Denver receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker joined the veteran quarterback, working with Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who was Manning's quarterbacks coach at Tennessee and oversaw much of the quarterback's work when he was recovering from his neck surgeries. Welker left the Patriots and signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Broncos this offseason.

DENVER - One of the most storied NFL playoff teams ran into a rejuvenated Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos. Sorry, Pittsburgh Steelers. The magic is back. Tebow connected with Demaryius Thomas on an electrifying 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime and the Broncos defeated the stunned Steelers, 29-23, in the AFC wild-card game yesterday. Wild doesn't begin to describe it. The play took 11 seconds and was the quickest ending to an overtime in NFL history.

DENVER - Wild wins are becoming routine for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos, who flail away through most of four quarters before coming through in the clutch. Matt Prater's 51-yard field goal 6 1/2 minutes into overtime gave the Broncos a 13-10 victory over the stunned Chicago Bears yesterday. Prater's 59-yarder with 3 seconds left in regulation tied the score after Tebow led another rally. "If you believe," Tebow said, "then unbelievable things can sometimes be possible.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Mike Tomlin needed only two words to describe the guy who ripped apart the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense in the Mile High City. "He's Peyton," the coach said with a shrug. He's Peyton Manning - and he's back. Wearing orange for the first time since his playing days at the University of Tennessee, the former Indianapolis Colts star wasn't about to let a 20-month layoff for neck surgery wreck his debut with the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Using the no-huddle, the four-time MVP led the Broncos on a trio of 80-yard touchdown drives and kept Ben Roethlisberger's troops guessing until the final whistle in a 31-19 victory.
