They all remember the sound and the feel and not knowing what it was. It was "sort of like a sonic boom," said Jerry Milford, 38, of Indianapolis, traveling with his family in Row 37, the second-to-last row of United Airlines Flight 232. It felt like "a sudden, strong jolt," said A. Upton Rehnberg, 52, of Rockford, Ill., an executive with an aircraft-parts manufacturer, seated in Row 9 at the front of the coach section. It was "kind of like an explosion. . . . It almost felt like you hit something," said Donna Treber, 47, of Westminster, Colo.

DENVER - A crowd of marijuana smokers expected to swell to 80,000 gathered Saturday in Denver to mark the counterculture holiday known as 4/20 on the first celebration since Colorado and Washington state made pot legal for recreational use. Reggae music filled the air, and so did the smell of marijuana, as revelers gathered by midmorning in a park just beside the state Capitol. Few police were in sight, though public marijuana use is still prohibited here. "People aren't afraid to come out and celebrate it the way they used to be," said Charles Bade, 52, of Denver.

The Denver Nuggets traded guard Walter Davis, a 14-year veteran, to the Portland Trail Blazers yesterday as part of a complicated three-team, four- player deal that sent power forward Greg Anderson and a first-round draft pick from the New Jersey Nets to Denver. Denver received nothing directly from Portland for Davis, who has averaged nearly 20 points per game in his career. But Portland agreed to send Drazen Petrovic to the Nets to help set up Denver's deal for Anderson. The Nets also received Terry Mills from the Nuggets.

DENVER - No matter where his season or his career might end, Joe Flacco will always have The Fling. And Peyton Manning will always have to live with that throw he made, too. Flacco's desperation, 70-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones with 31 seconds left in regulation saved the game for Baltimore in regulation, and Manning's throw across his body in overtime all but lost it for Denver. On a frostbitten day in Denver (the temperature was 13 degrees at kickoff), the Ravens got a 47-yard field goal from Justin Tucker 1 minute, 42 seconds into the second overtime Saturday to pull off a 38-35 upset over Manning and the Broncos, extending linebacker Ray Lewis' career by at least one game.

JACK KEROUAC'S stream of consciousness novel On the Road comes to the screen more or less intact as a not-altogether-satisfying road trip into the Beat Era. The "Motorcycle Diaries" team of director Walter Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera have made an "unfilmmable" book cinematically coherent, capturing the geographical possibilities, the feel and flavor of this blend of biography and Beatnik history. Sam Riley ("Control") is Sal Paradise, the "witness," the teller-of-the-tale - Kerouac by another name.
