Looking for a boost, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff emphatically said Sunday night that Derek Roy would suit up for Buffalo tonight in Game 7 for the first time since Dec. 23, when he severed his left quadriceps in a freak run-in with a skate. Ruff suddenly backpedaled yesterday when asked about the status of the Sabres center. "I don't even know if he's playing yet," Ruff told the Olean (N.Y.) Times Herald after the Sabres' skate yesterday in Buffalo. "I don't know what to expect.

BUFFALO - No need to revisit the lost Super Bowls and Stanley Cup playoff runs that fell short, but Buffalo for years has been a pessimistic, if not tortured, sports town. Sabres owner Terry Pegula changed the culture with his positive nature and commitment to winning. In less than 2 months, he restored faith and hope. Remember, winning is not a goal. It's a belief. Of course, you believed yesterday afternoon when Rob Niedermayer wired a wrist shot into the top corner for an early lead against the Flyers, sending the 18,600 fans inside HSBC Arena and another 6,000 outside its doors into pure, unbridled jubilation.

As Jason Pominville hopped on one leg up the runway toward the Sabres' locker room Friday at the Wells Fargo Center, blood pouring down his other leg, he left his teammates several voids to fill as Buffalo tries to oust the Flyers from the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Sunday at HSBC Arena. Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Saturday that Pominville would not play in Game 6. Ruff would not disclose specifics of the injury, but it's believed Pominville suffered a severe cut from a skate.

Sabres defensemen Mike Weber, Chris Butler and Marc-Andre Gragnani all made their playoff debuts last night but Mark Mancari will have to wait as he was a healthy scratch. That allowed Mike Grier to return to the lineup after missing seven games with a sore knee. Defenseman Andrej Sekera's upper-body strain continues to be troublesome and he also sat out. Sekera and Mancari joined No. 3 goalie Patrick Lalime and the injured Jordan Leopold and Derek Roy on the ice following the team's pregame workout.

Ryan Miller made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season and 14th overall, and Thomas Vanek had a goal and assist in the Buffalo Sabres' 3-0 victory over the visiting New York Islanders last night. Derek Roy and Paul Gaustad also scored to help the Sabres rebound from a 5-0 loss to the Islanders Saturday on Long Island. Miller was solid throughout, and rarely allowed any rebound opportunities. The Sabres have the stingiest defense in the NHL, allowing only 24 goals in 12 games.

Ryan Miller says Danny Briere should receive a warm reception when he steps onto the ice at HSBC Arena tonight for the first time in a Flyers sweater. And the Sabres' goalie is making a prediction. "Danny is not happy unless he has a nice night of points," Miller said. Briere, talking on his cell phone, laughed. "He said that? You know what will make me happy? If we win the game - that's all I need," Briere said. Briere and Flyers goalie Martin Biron's long-awaited return to Buffalo is upon us. "I haven't talked to Danny a lot," Miller said.

A battered Fredrik Sjostrom scored twice and Martin Hanzal had a goal and three assists yesterday to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. After staking the Coyotes to a 1-0 lead, Sjostrom crashed heavily into the boards behind the Devils' net midway through the second period and had to be helped off the ice. He returned for the third period and helped score three more goals in a satisfying road win. Sjostrom said after the game that he was sore.

The streets lining Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena are draped with banners celebrating the Penguins' first playoff appearance in 6 years. The Buffalo Sabres gave the home team a reminder of what it takes to win in the postseason. The Sabres clinched the Northeast Division and wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time in 27 years, slowing Pittsburgh's rush to the postseason with a 4-1 win last night. In a possible playoff preview, Thomas Vanek scored his 40th and Jason Pominville scored slightly more than a minute later in the third period to put the Sabres up by three in only their fourth victory in Pittsburgh in 10 years.
