Derrick Ross broke his own season rushing record and the Soul dismantled one of the Arena Football League's hottest teams Sunday. And this was just a tune-up. In the final game of the regular season, the Soul turned in what may have been the most dominating performance of their 18 games, downing the Utah Blaze, 69-34, in front of 12,765 fans at the Wells Fargo Center. Utah had won six consecutive games. At 15-3, the Soul will carry the best record into the playoffs next weekend when they host the fourth-seeded New Orleans VooDoo, whom they beat, 63-62, in Week 1. They had the top seed in the playoffs locked up a week ago. "We just need to play Soul football next weekend and we should come away with the victory," Ross said.

SOUL RUNNING back Derrick Ross was named first-team all-AFL for the fourth consecutive season. Ross, the league's all-time leading rusher, broke his own team record this season by running for 36 touchdowns. Ross should get consideration for the league's offensive MVP award, though Arizona quarterback Nick Davila is probably the favorite. The remainder of the AFL's awards will be announced next week ahead of the Aug. 23 championship game between Cleveland and visiting Arizona.

THE SOUL signed coach Clint Dolezel to a 2-year contract. Dolezel took over on an interim basis after Doug Plank surprisingly left after the season to take the Orlando job. Dolezel was the Soul's assistant head coach last season and was in charge of the offense, which led the league with 68.2 points per game. The Soul rebounded from a 6-10 season in 2011 to advance to the AFL championship before losing badly to Arizona. Keeping Dolezel will give the Soul an edge in retaining key players such as quarterback Dan Raudabaugh, wide receiver Tiger Jones and running back Derrick Ross.

THE SOUL started its two-game Florida road trip by hitting its first sour note of the season in a 55-47 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday. The defeat ended a season-opening seven-game winning streak for Philadelphia (7-1), which committed three turnovers and forced none. Jacksonville recovered each of its two fumbles. Dan Raudabaugh threw seven touchdown passes and an interception for the Soul, which was without fullback Tommy Taggart in the second half. Taggart sustained a right high-ankle sprain and was replaced in the backfield by Bryan Robinson, a veteran defensive lineman.

TO MOST football fans, Willie McGinest is the NFL Network analyst who was selected to two Pro Bowls and was a big part of three championship teams for the New England Patriots. To Soul linebacker Beau Bell, the former linebacker represents something much more personal. Bell was a fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2008 when he met McGinest, who was about to begin his 15th and final NFL season. Bell tweaked his knee in training camp and was coming off arthroscopic surgery.

IN THE REALM of arena football, what the Soul did this offseason was comparable to the Eagles' trading LeSean McCoy. Following a mediocre season and first-round playoff loss, the Soul traded Derrick Ross, easily the best fullback in franchise history and largely considered to be the best the AFL has ever known. Traditional running backs are called fullbacks in the arena league. In return, the Soul received a stud linebacker - sound familiar, Eagles fans? - in this case Beau Bell, who was first-team all-AFL for Los Angeles last year.

If Soul coach Clint Dolezel is fearful about opening the playoffs against a juggernaut with the best regular-season record in Arena Football League history, he didn't show it. "We match up well with them," Dolezel said of the Soul (9-9), who will play a wild-card game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena against the Cleveland Gladiators (17-1). "They are a veteran club kind of like we are. " The Soul do have a healthy dose of respect for the top-seeded Gladiators. "The biggest difference is they believe they are going to win every football game," Dolezel said.

The Soul (9-9) were left in playoff limbo after losing to the Power, 64-34, in Pittsburgh Saturday night. But all they had to do was wait for the Tampa Bay Storm to lose to the Cleveland Gladiators (which they did, 56-49), and the Soul slipped into the playoffs. The Soul will travel to the No. 1-seeded Gladiators for a game Saturday at 7:30. "You hate having to back into the playoffs," Soul coach Clint Dolezel said after the Soul lost, "but we will be rooting for Cleveland and get in the right frame of mind to be ready for next week.

In setting a team record for fewest points allowed in a game this season, the Soul kept their Arena Football League playoff hopes alive with a 42-20 win over San Jose (12-5) on Sunday night. When they met in March, the SaberCats had romped, 70-33. The Soul improved to 9-8 in their home finale in front of 10,471 at the Wells Fargo Center. They need a win Saturday over the Pittsburgh Power and a Tampa Bay loss to clinch the final playoff spot. "This is playoff football," coach Clint Dolezel said.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN Teddy Jennings set a team record for sacks in a game as the Soul ended its three-game losing streak with a convincing, 84-48 win at Iowa on Saturday. Jennings, an AFL rookie who played collegiately at Connecticut, had 3 1/2 sacks to lead a Soul defense that had let the team down during the recent skid. He had two sacks to essentially halt a third-quarter Iowa drive when the Soul held a 40-34 lead. After a Philadelphia touchdown and two-point conversion, Jennings wrapped up Iowa quarterback J.J. Raterink for a safety that gave the Soul a 50-34 lead and control of the game.

YOU ARE WHAT your record says you are, and for the Soul that means being stuck in neutral. An awful fourth quarter led to another disappointing loss as the Soul fell to host Tampa Bay on Saturday, 56-49. Philadelphia dropped to 6-6. "We made enough plays to win this game," coach Clint Dolezel said after the game. "But, we have to win the fourth quarter and finish. We didn't do that tonight. " Tampa Bay outscored the Soul, 22-0, in the final quarter to also move to 6-6. The Storm won the season series, 2-1, and now hold the playoff tiebreaker.
