LOS ANGELES - Ever since Thad Matta and Sean Miller shared a tiny office at Miami of Ohio nearly 2 decades ago, the coaches' friendship has survived. They've worked together and recruited against each other. They've shared scouting tips and sought job advice. "I wouldn't be here today without him," Miller said Wednesday. They remain close heading into their next meeting, Thursday at Staples Center, when the second-seeded Buckeyes (28-7) meet Miller's Arizona Wildcats (27-7)

Deshaun Thomas scored 21 points to lead No. 7 Ohio State past Winthrop, 65-55, on Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio. It was the last tune-up for the Buckeyes (9-1) before Saturday's rematch with No. 9 Kansas. The Jayhawks beat them twice last year, including in the Final Four. Whether Ohio State was looking past Winthrop (4-5) or whether the Eagles just played well, the game was in doubt until Thomas got hot. Kansas 87, Richmond 59 - Jeff Withey had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (9-1)

BOSTON - For a moment there, Ohio State looked done for. The Buckeyes were a step slow getting to Cincinnati shooters. As another Bearcats three-pointer rained in, Ohio State shoulders slumped on the court. For that moment, it looked like a sweep for the Big East of Thursday's three NCAA games between that conference and the Big Ten. But just as quickly, Ohio State restored its inside-outside game, forced some turnovers, recovered its equilibrium, and proved worthy of its No. 2 seed, winning the battle for Ohio by taking out the Bearcats, 81-66, at TD Garden.

A ball that rattled around the rim and bounced out on Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, separated Michigan from its first No. 1 ranking in 20 years. Sophomore point guard Trey Burke's jumper with 17 seconds remaining went down, then came out, leaving the No. 2 Wolverines on the wrong side of a 56-53 loss to 15th-ranked Ohio State. After top-ranked Duke lost to North Carolina State on Saturday, the Wolverines were in prime position to ascend to No. 1 for the first time since November 1992.

LOS ANGELES - LaQuinton Ross hit the tiebreaking three-pointer with 2 seconds to play, and Ohio State advanced to the brink of its second straight Final Four appearance with a 73-70 victory over Arizona on Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals. Ross, the Buckeyes' remarkable reserve, scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half for the second-seeded Buckeyes (29-7), who rallied from an early 11-point deficit and weathered the sixth-seeded Wildcats' late charge for their 11th consecutive victory since mid-February.

Aaron Craft slashed through the lane for a career-high 21 points on Sunday - more than he had scored in the last three games combined - to lead No. 18 Ohio State to a 68-60 victory over fourth-ranked Michigan State. The loss crippled the Spartans' hopes of catching up with top-ranked Indiana, which now leads the Big Ten race by two full games with four remaining. Deshaun Thomas added 12 of his 14 points in the second half for the Buckeyes (20-7, 10-5 Big Ten), who stand fifth in the conference.

CODY ZELLER squeezed the basketball as the final seconds ticked off the clock, sealing Indiana's first outright Big Ten title in 2 decades. It was a fitting finish, for sure. Because without some huge plays by their 7-foot center, the second-ranked Hoosiers would've had to share the conference championship. Zeller made a go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and altered Trey Burke's shot at the other end, lifting visiting Indiana to a 72-71 victory over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday. "We've been working on that all year - closing out games," said Zeller, who had 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo knows that to stop Deshaun Thomas is the surest way to stop No. 11 Ohio State. "Thomas is shooting the lights out. He's been really effective," Izzo said during preparations for his 18th-ranked Spartans' home game against the Buckeyes on Saturday night. "We've got to contain Thomas. " The thing is, no one really has been able to do that all season. The 6-foot-7 junior leads the Big Ten in scoring (by more than two full points) at 20.3 points a game.
