A singer's speaking voice doesn't have to jibe with her stage voice. Still, the soft, lilting sound coming through the closed bedroom door of the Four Seasons couldn't possibly be Gladys Knight. We all know Knight's voice. A rich, heart-and-gut contralto, it's as much her trademark as Mick Jagger's lips are his or Tina Turner's gams are hers. For 37 years, until she went solo in 1989, her gospel-hued vocals provided the lead for Gladys Knight and the Pips, the rhythm-and-blues group as legendary for its longevity as for its hits.

REMEMBER Vince Young? Came to town to be Michael Vick's backup but then began spouting off about a "Dream Team," a boast neither he nor the Eagles could live up to. Young's eight interceptions in three starts were proof enough that he couldn't read a defense. And now, he's proving he can't read a checkbook either. Young has been ordered to pay a loan company nearly $1.7 million after missing a payment in May. BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Every training camp for the last 18 years, Jeffrey Lurie has taken the podium to answer questions about the state of the Eagles, and for many of those press conferences the asking has been an exercise in futility. There were exceptions. One year Lurie uttered the phrase gold standard - one that will haunt him until his team finally wins a Super Bowl. Two years ago, he cited America's recidivism rate in explaining why Michael Vick would remain on double secret probation after a gun-shooting incident at his birthday party.
