King David, the heroin-dealing gangsta played by DMX in Never Die Alone, is dead. Right from the get-go, the first frame of the film, there he is: laid out in a coffin. "He had this nobility," gushes Paul (David Arquette), an aspiring writer and white guy who's talking about King David a little while later - and who figures more prominently in the movie than his character warrants. Adapted from cult pulp novelist Donald Goines' mid-'70s book, Never Die Alone wants to be a "richly literate film noir" (wishful thinking straight from Fox Searchlight's production notes!

After DMX got signed to a major label in 1991, his career went nowhere. Listening to his debut album "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot," it's clear he went through some rough times. Violence, anger and depression permeate the disc, which is full of hardcore tracks and hardcore tales of ghetto life. No, it's nothing you haven't heard before, especially if you're an aficionado of hardcore rappers like Scarface, to whom DMX seems more comparable than his East Coast cronies. But what sets DMX apart is his distinctive, growly voice and the energy with which he kicks his rhymes.

It's all fun and games until the flame-engulfed airliner crashes into the Atlantic. A bit of wisdom, we hope, that 35-year-old youngster DMX (Earl Simmons) learned this weekend. Authorities yesterday said the Baltimore native was arrested for having the Terrible Twos aboard a New York-to-London flight Saturday, refusing to put on a seat belt and getting in the face of airline staff. The rapper was given a caution and released upon landing at Heathrow. Hold the presses! Paul Hewson, who turned 46 on Wednesday, has added newspaper editor to his already-majestic career.

During Friday night's rap concert at the Dell East, opening act DMX made no direct comment regarding his arraignment the previous day in New York on charges of raping and sodomizing a New York strip-club dancer. Unfortunately, this self-imposed gag order did not extend to the rapper's frequently crude references to women, including, at times, those in attendance. Actually, DMX didn't have to say anything. The frenzied audience saluted him by rapping along to his every song, word for word, even matching his trademark dog barking with the most impressive human display of canine sound effects since the taping of the last episode of Arsenio Hall's talk show.

POLICE IN Scottsdale, Ariz., have issued a misdemeanor citation to DMX (aka Earl Simmons) for carrying a concealed handgun outside a nightclub. Officers said they watched the rapper take a gun from a holster and put it under the front seat of his 1964 Chevrolet convertible outside a club last Friday night. It's just another line on the DMX blotter. Earlier this month, he was cited for traffic violations in White Plains, N.Y. Last month, he was arrested in London after allegedly refusing to put on a seat belt and becoming abusive on a flight from New York.

DMX WAS supposed to appear in a White Plains, N.Y., court Wednesday to face a slew of bad-driving charges, but when he failed to show, the judge who had already granted him two postponements had had enough. Judge Barbara Leak issued an arrest warrant for the rapper (aka Earl Simmons). "We have granted him a number of courtesies," the judge said. "It ends now. " DMX's lawyer, Stacey Murray, promised that he would come to court yesterday. He did. And he went to jail - held on $25,000 bail.

Hot rapper DMX seemed to have it all - a platinum album, an upcoming movie, a baby on the way with his longtime girlfriend and a tour with a stop in Philly tonight. But in the early morning hours of Saturday, a 29-year-old New York City strip-club dancer alleges, he raped her. The 27-year-old rapper was arraigned in New York yesterday and freed on $10,000 bail. After partying at the New York strip club Harlem Nights on Friday night, DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, apparently convinced the dancer to leave with him. The dancer alleged that Simmons raped and sodomized her at the South Bronx apartment of one of his friends, the police report said.

DMX (aka Earl Simmons, aka Pit Bull), who's usually being admonished by judges because of his driving, got bitch-slapped in a ruling by Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Jane Goodman for failing to fulfill a contract to promote a dog- clothing line including caps, scarves, raincoats and bomber jackets. Doesn't every self-respecting dog need a bomber jacket? DMX was ordered to pay $242,000 to Amusing Diversions Inc., the company that produced and marketed the canine-clothing line, named for Simmons' own dog, Boomer 129. The business relationship got off to a tail-wagging start but turned snarly after DMX failed to promote the doggie duds on TV, at concerts and at other public events as called for by the contract.

" - Teen dream BRITNEY SPEARS on the boy she'd like to meet, "Boogie Nights" star Mark Wahlberg Twenty-four dollars and an apology may be the cushiest sentence DMX will ever face. That's all it took to resolve the latest charges against the hardcore hip-hopper, arrested for using obscene language during a concert in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Saturday night. Hauled offstage by cops, DMX was denied bail and spent the night in jail.
