Philadelphia public schools will close at noon today because of expected heat and humidity. The School District said in a notice posted on its website Sunday that it decided to send students homes early today because of a forecast of temperatures in the upper 90s. The forecast this morning, however, only calls for a high of 82 under partly sunny skies. But it also will be humid. The noon closing also affects early childhood programs and after school programs will be canceled, the district said.

Firefighters survey the scene at 52nd Street at Girard Avenue in West Philadelphia after a 48-inch water main broke last night, flooding several blocks and forcing the temporary evacuation of homes in a six-block area. No injuries were reported. The giant main broke about 10 p.m. on 53rd Street just above Girard and also flooded Thompson, Poplar and Stiles streets, said Deputy Water Commissioner Richard Roy. Water service to most homes in the area was restored early today.

Four men were shot, two fatally, in a pair of unrelated shootings that erupted within three blocks of each other and an hour apart last night in South Philadelphia, police said. The fatal shootings occurred about 8 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Stillman Street, a narrow, tree-lined block near 25th and Tasker Streets. David Cotton, 38, and Richard Mills, 42, were cut down outside their homes, witnesses told police, by bullets fired by a third man who was later taken into custody and was being questioned early today by detectives.

A police officer shot and killed a man early today during a disturbance in the backyard of a Frankford home, police said. The officer also was wounded in the incident shortly after 1 a.m. outside a house on Edmund Street near Margaret, police said. Details of the incident were sketchy, but police said the victim was shot at least once by the officer. He was was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were withholding the identity of the victim until his family is notified.

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot with his weapon just before midnight in an argument with his wife at their West Philadelphia home, police said. Police said the officer, identified as Harvey Douglas, 46, of the 14th District, was shot in the chest as the two argued inside their house in the 5800 block of Haverford Avenue. The officer was taken by ambulance to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was undergoing emergency treatment early today.

A 15-year-old boy was critically wounded last night during an apparent robbery in the 100 block of North Vodges Street in West Philadelphia by a gunman pretending to be a police officer, police said. Police said the youth was approached about 8:30 p.m. by a man who falsely identified himself as a police officer and frisked the teenager. The man then drew a handgun and shot the youth in the face, police said. The youth was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where a hospital spokeswoman said he was listed in critical condition early today.

Vincent J. Ferraro, 21, of Shelmire Avenue near Lawndale, was killed early today when the car he was driving struck a utility pole on Rising Sun Avenue near Adams Avenue in Olney. Police said the impact of the crash sheared the left side of the frame and the top off the car. Police said Ferraro was driving north on Rising Sun when the accident occurred. He was dead on arrival at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Northern Division.

One person was critically wounded and a police officer injured last night as violence erupted when police stopped a suspected stolen car in West Philadelphia, police said. The suspect was wounded at least once in the face - apparently by police gunfire - during the 11:25 p.m. incident on 46th Street near Spruce, police said. He was in critical condition early today at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The officer was in guarded condition early today at Graduate Hospital with neck and back injuries received when he was hit by the stolen car, police said.

A man was shot and critically wounded early today in North Philadelphia, police said. Officers found the victim about 1:35 a.m. on the 3600 block of Marshall Street in the Franklinville neighborhood, police said. He had been shot in the thigh and the back. The man, said to be about 28-years-old, was taken to Temple University Hospital and placed in critical condition, police said. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.
