Shameless has always gotten the short end of the stick. In any other previous TV landscapes, it might get its due. But with so much to watch, it's too often neglected. Shameless - its sixth season premieres at 9 p.m. Sunday on Showtime - perpetrates two great sins that keep it out of the Golden Age of TV conversation. The first is it's not perfect. It can be uneven. Characters can be written into corners. Its star - William H. Macy - was miscast in the lead as the ultimate deadbeat, formerly inebriated dad Frank Gallagher, who also ends up being the least interesting of his entire clan.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - One shares a name with a fairytale princess; another, with a real-life royalty. Yesterday, the little Evans redheads couldn't wait to watch athletic majesty. Fiona, 12, and Kate, 8, patiently waited in their seats behind third base at Lemade Stadium for the Taney Dragons to play their first Little League World Series game. Specifically, they waited to watch Mo'ne Davis, the 13-year-old starting pitcher for the Philadelphia all-star squad. "I want to see the girl pitcher," said Fiona, who plays third base in softball back home in Scranton.

J.K. SIMMONS, who's played everything from a neo-Nazi on "Oz" to a tabloid editor in "Spider-Man," wasn't interested in being just another clueless TV father. "The prototype sitcom dad is a doofus who's sort of the oldest of the children," Simmons said last month in an interview in Pasadena, Calif. No one's likely to say that about Mel Fisher, the blind, fiercely independent and newly single father Simmons portrays in NBC's new comedy "Growing Up Fisher. " Still, "between the kids and the [guide]

To the Bock family of Chester Springs, the Bernese mountain dogs Fiona and Argus were happy, loving pets. To neighbor Gabriel Pilotti, they were apparently pests. And when he found them loose among his sheep last week, he shot them dead. "It was just really vicious," Mary Bock said. The dogs had not touched the sheep. Pilotti could not be reached for comment. As of Thursday evening, the Chester County District Attorney's Office and the West Vincent Township police still were trying to determine what happened the morning of Feb. 12 in a part of Chester County where sheep, horses, and alpacas amble in yards larger than the patches of green in more urbanized suburbs and smaller than more rural farms.

* SHAMELESS. 9 p.m. Sunday, Showtime. PASADENA, CALIF. - Emmy Rossum has stopped worrying about looking too good. Three seasons into "Shameless," the Showtime series in which she stars as Fiona Gallagher, a harried twenty-something who's raising her siblings with no help whatsoever from their alcoholic father (William H. Macy), Rossum's found a way to bridge the divide between the polished red-carpet persona that's made her the darling of fashion bloggers and her often disheveled character, whose look she also loves - if only for its ease.

‘That's where the pain comes in, like a second skeleton," Fiona Apple sings on "Every Single Night," from her fourth album and her first in seven years, whose full title is The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do . With Apple's music, the pain comes in early and often, along with the anxiety, neuroses, and — even better — the survival skills and talent that...

Fiona Apple is playing just a handful of small-venue shows this month in advance of the June release of her first album in seven years. (It has a 23-word title, the first three of which are The Idler Wheel .) So there was electricity in the air for Saturday night's sold-out performance at the cozy Music Box theater at the Borgata in Atlantic City - a space less than half the size of the casino hotel's Event Center, where marquee acts normally perform. That wasn't due only to the show's rarity or relative intimacy, though.

"Shrek Forever After" is about the big green ogre wrestling with the problems of middle age, and though he has a tough time of it, things could be worse. For one thing, Shrek doesn't have to fret about getting fat and cranky. He was already both of those things. And he's already made the biggest decision confronting males of his age - do I wear my pants under my paunch, or over it? Shrek's an under. So how are his problems made manifest? Well, his kids are in his face all the time, and his spouse is a constant, throbbing pain in his rear-end.
