EATING A big steak and napping on the couch is how a lot of dads celebrated Father's Day on Sunday. Not Zeke Galloza. The 40-year-old fitness trainer, a father of two, worked on his house and took his son to the musical "Rock of Ages. " I've admired Galloza for years - not only for his expertise as a trainer but also as a dad to 15-year-old Airanna and 11-year-old Jaden. Even as his marriage went south when his children were young, his proud Puerto Rican heritage and belief in family kept him committed to those kids.

"Who knows who's gonna apply for, you know, the fatherhood gig?" Madonna asked plaintively on prime-time TV, just a few months ago. Oh, that Madonna. She knew. She'd had a couple of high-profile rejections in her very public search for a man to father her baby. She'd been firmly turned down by kooky Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman. Latin dreamboat Antonio Banderas also passed, choosing to impregnate Melanie Griffith instead. But all along, he was right there: the guy she hired to spot her while she was weight-lifting, put her through her running paces and generally keep her pulse rate up. Her fitness trainer, the relatively unfamous Carlos Leon, eventually became Madonna's boy toy and, now, the father of her baby-to-be.

British tourist Lavern Paul Ritch spent the day Saturday in Margate the way many visitors do: lounging on the beach, dining in a restaurant, and then hitting a few nightclubs to round out the evening. By the next morning, the 37-year-old fitness trainer from Wales was dead, and authorities in this Jersey Shore town yesterday continued to search for the man who stabbed him in the heart. Police said Ritch, who was on vacation in the United States for two weeks and had been staying with friends from Cherry Hill, was killed early Sunday trying to intervene in a fight near the intersection of North Washington and Monmouth Avenues.

Going back to school has become the trendy thing to do; and just like sport utility vehicles and Pokemon, everyone is buying into it. People are sucked in by this fallacy that to be successful and make a decent living, you need a college degree and must forever be scrambling to take graduate and continuing education courses. Society is putting more emphasis on academic degrees and titles than on experience and actually knowing how to do something. People have told me that even though they themselves did not have a degree, they were asked to train new hires coming in with degrees but no experience.

Jackie Blake is no stranger to intensive workouts. A petite 38-year old certified fitness trainer at Philly Total Fitness & Dance, she recently decided to up her workout a notch by incorporating weight training into her daily fitness regimen. To make things interesting, she decided to check out a nearby "hard-core" South Philadelphia gym. When she strolled into the 5,000-square-foot gymnasium at Body World dressed in a tailored pantsuit, she said, the head of every man in the place turned to check her out. But the stares stopped the moment her rigorous workout began.

Republican Camden County freeholder candidates Kimone Smith and Teddy Liddell are running a shoestring, shoe-leather campaign. They're knocking on doors and shaking hands in hopes of serving on a board that has been GOP-free for 21 years - in a county government where the last elected Republican left office in 1996. And they're campaigning in a county of 228 square miles and half a million people where their party is locally competitive in just a handful of municipalities. "Yes, you can call me something of an idealist," Smith, 25, a fitness trainer who lives in Camden's Parkside section, says with a smile.

LOS ANGELES - There's something of the old married couple about Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr., though they're married to other people. They've known each other for 20 years, through bad times (his) and good (hers all along, and now his, too). They're cozy and comfy sitting down together for an interview, shifting easily between talking about their Marvel Studios superhero sequel "Iron Man 3," chatting up each other's career and family, and trading small talk about their little ailments as Downey rummages through a case of nostrums he travels with.

Four times a week at the Philadelphia Sports Club in Society Hill, a band of masochistic loyalists gathers to do Scott Dougherty's bidding. The glass-and-mirrors exercise room overlooks Fifth Street, so passersby in the mood for a little schadenfreude can watch them suffer. The exercises may seem routine. The crunch. The lunge. The plank. The push-up. But Dougherty's repertoire is expansive and fierce, with complicated moves bearing exotic names like the Turkish Get-Up, which should be outlawed by the Geneva Conventions.

IN MARCH, Jamaal Jackson couldn't even hang from a pull-up bar. In March, Todd Herremans weighed 275 pounds. In March, Juqua Parker had people wondering why the Eagles signed him to a 5-year deal - to average five sacks a season. In March, Brent Celek was a two-game wonder. Then, they visited Steve Saunders at the Power Train Sports Institute site in Cherry Hill. There, they enjoyed - or, endured - not only exotic workouts but also strict, tailored diets that even monitor vitamin and mineral intake.
