It was elbow-to-elbow eating, but the 700 guests didn't mind. They were at the "Taste of the Countryside" event Tuesday in the Radisson Airport Hotel. It was the third annual food festival sponsored by the Delaware County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Mid-Atlantic Events magazine, and the hotel. The idea of the festival, previously sponsored by the Delco Chamber of Commerce, was to connect those who prepare and serve all that food and drink with those who order it up for large functions.

Historians, working with Weekend, have only now discovered why there are so many "Washington Slept Here" signs in our inns and lodges. There must have been more than one George Washington. This weekend, two George Washingtons - truth be told, actors portraying him - will offer slices of the life and times, and food and drink, of the founding father at Washington's birthday celebrations throughout the area. Washington's Birthday - again, the truth - is Sunday. He would have been 255 years old. And the public, as befits a democracy, is invited.

Today, travelers, everything you need to know about jet lag. What is the best cure for jet lag? There are various schools of thought on this. Some experts say the best thing is just to ignore it once you arrive and carry on as usual according to the time clock of your destination. For this you will need the cooperation of those nearest and dearest to you, particularly those sitting next to you at dinner. People suffering from jet lag often fall face forward into the soup, but - more embarrassing to all concerned - they have also been known to wash up with it, imagining it to be the morning basin of water.

It had something to do with being a father. It had everything to do with a 9-year-old boy named Brian Swierczek, who suffers from acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia. Brian is recovering from a bone marrow transplant in a Seattle hospital. Brian's father, Tim, is an employee of Federal Express in Philadelphia. In a show of support, 105 bicyclists, most of whom work for Federal Express in Horsham and Philadelphia and some of whom know the Swierczeks, took part in a fund-raising bike ride to benefit Brian and his family.

Media's Towne House restaurant was the setting last week for a visit from Fritz Maytag, one of the unsung heroes of the American food scene. Though the Maytags are best known for their line of household appliances, not everyone in the family has dedicated his life to making America a cleaner, dryer place to live. This Maytag has revived the brewery that makes Anchor Steam Beer, cooks up top-shelf whiskeys and gin at his own micro-distillery, produces cave-aged Maytag Blue cheese, and owns California's York Creek vineyard and winery.

It has been a few years now since Timothy Cannon has returned to Scotland to celebrate New Year's Day. Still, his recollections of that special time are strong. He remembers with particular fondness the ritual that many Scots refer to as the Firstfooter. "A couple of minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve, the father and the eldest son in the family go outside the front door," said Cannon, 59, who lives in Reading. "They take with them a bottle of Scotch and a piece of coal.

Traveling to foreign countries is much tougher with kids in tow. But it's possible to get that exotic travel experience without taking the typical beach or all-inclusive resort trip. In Puerto Rico, it feels like you've left the States: Spanish is the primary language, gas is sold in liters, and architecture resembles Mexico much more than Maryland. The island, though, has been a U.S. territory since 1898, and along with highway postings in Spanish, you'll see familiar road construction signs for the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, and all the chain stores you get at home.

EVERYBODY LOVES the food-trend story about the Next Big Thing. We love those list-y, breathlessly cheerful pronouncements of what's "best of" the city, of what the cool kids are eating and drinking, of what is - as they say - "hot. " And yet . . . how do I put this? Food trend stories about the Next Big Thing almost always suck. Maybe I'm just self-reflecting. Writers absolutely hate doing this sort of piece. If I list 10 trends, I'll be lucky if you agree with, like, two of them.

I have been missing my Philly fix for these past two weeks as I've been far afield on a combo platter of adventures that were part-vacation, part work. A few days of Williamsburg taverns gave me a new appreciation for the effort that goes into our own City Tavern, as imperfect as that is. My food highlight in that corner of Virginia was a day visit to the Edwards ham factory in Surrey, where we saw mountains of hams getting salted, cured, and smoked. Even better was lunch at the old Surrey House Restaurant, a tidy little Southern diner where I followed up my mini-ham sammies with one of the most unique pie wonders I've had of late - peanut-raisin pie, a peanutty twist on classic pecan that I'm definitely going to be trying to re-create.

WHEN IT COMES to delicious drinking and dining, 2010 was a very good year. A slew of notable restaurants opened, including Marc Vetri's Amis, Val Safran and Marcie Turney's stellar Barbuzzo, and Jose Garces' namesake Trading Co. and J.G. Domestic. Former Four Seasons chef Marty Hamann earned raves at the Union League's 1862 by Martin Hamann, the best restaurant in town that most of us can't get into. Stephen Starr opened El Rey in the former Midtown as well as the dark and sexy Ranstead Room, and transformed the Museum Restaurant into stylish Granite Hill in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Philly finally got a grown-up cocktail lounge/restaurant with a view with the opening of Daniel Stern's swank R2L. Mike Stollenwerk's Fish remains the best place in town to eat seafood, especially if you're not on a diet.

London Bridge is the landmark here. But it's still the West, pardner, so I wasn't surprised when a pistol-packing buddy in a four-wheeler offered to drive me into the Mojave Desert to shoot guns and drink beer. Or when the ad for Sam's Shooters Emporium invited drifters like me to "stop by and shoot a live machine gun on our air-conditioned indoor ranges. " Yet largely due to a transplanted bridge from faraway England, this town of 50,000 residents across the Colorado River from California is also a laid-back place with much to do, see and imbibe, in a state where even Walgreen's sells hard liquor.

IF YOU'RE NOT going to lug your own clear plastic wrapped hoagie to an Eagles home game this season, then you'd better bring an open mind, a lusty appetite and a stuffed wallet. "We've set out to provide a variety of food," said John Nuttall, general manager for SportService in charge of the Lincoln Financial Field operation. "Local flavors. And we definitely did not want 'sticker shock' in the new building. " Two out of three ain't bad. There's a vast spectrum of food, everything from sushi to salads.
