NEW YORK - Putting the cart before the store was the right recipe for ice cream maker Buck Buchanan. Back in 2001, Buchanan was a stay-at-home father using his training as a chef to give cooking lessons to supplement his wife's income. Boredom set in and he decided to start a gourmet ice cream cart. Later, he added a truck - and drove to concerts and sporting events to sell his treats. In March, he opened his first Lumpy's Ice Cream shop in downtown Wake Forest, N.C. "My thought was to build a clientele, build a customer base, so when I actually opened the store, people would flock to it," Buchanan said.

The more cultured among us may raise a pinkie to the James Beard Foundation, which annually bestows its Beard Awards on the nation's loftier restaurants and chefs. But for populist street food honors, we have the Vendy Awards, which recognize sidewalk chefs. Philly is amid a boom in food trucks, with zones extending from LOVE Park to the universities. Joining the cheesesteak and falafel trucks are a new wave of street vendors offering fish tacos, delicate macaroons, and even pizza from a wood-burning oven.

Champagne and hors d'oeuvres are in order from 5-8 p.m. Friday as Weavers Way Co-op ( weaversway.coop ) holds an open house to celebrate the co-op's new wellness and pet supply store, Weavers Way Across the Way, at 608-610 Carpenter Lane. It's across from Weavers Way's Mt. Airy store, currently undergoing renovations. Street food enthusiasts have narrowed the field a bit, but there are still difficult choices to be made as 12 food-truck vendors compete in the Philadelphia Vendys, 3-7 p.m. Saturday?

What's to eat? The genesis of all good things at the tiny, eye-poppingly bright yellow-and-red truck is a big, fat, juicy Angus burger for five or six bucks, depending how you build it. Wait: Five minutes. The Drexel Dragons are on summer break. Why we love it: Incredible burger taste without the trendy-burger-joint lines or skyscraper-high prices of Center City. Try this: One of the best bacon cheeseburgers ever. Or go for a daily special such as The Fresko, a "romantically seasoned" burger with marjoram, oregano, parsley, mint, minced garlic, cracked pepper and Mediterranean Sea salt, plus roasted peppers, arugula, goat cheese, tzatziki, balsamic reduction and Lord only knows what else.

IN THE FOOD business, there's not much that's trendier than a food truck. Maybe gluten-free pastry. Or garlic scapes. Or waiters with mustaches. That's about it. Breakfast through dinner, mobile culinary units have in recent years multiplied nationwide. In our town, the campuses of Temple, Drexel and Penn have long been home to falafel, kielbasa and soul-food vendors. Today, they also host trucks and carts serving gourmet grilled cheeses, breakfast tacos, pork bulgogi and vegan banh mi. Last year, LOVE Park became a temporary residence to a mess of mostly newbie trucks proffering wood-grilled pizza, custom burgers, Trinidadian doubles, single-origin coffee, red velvet cupcakes and "Iron Chef"-approved tacos.

Dan Pennachietti is a three-meatballs-are-better-than-one kind of guy, usually from an eating perspective. But lately, the Italian American food vendor in Philadelphia is applying his strength-in-numbers point of view beyond gastronomic cravings. His goal is to improve the business climate in the city for his burgeoning industry. Pennachietti has cofounded the Philadelphia Mobile Food Association (PMFA), incorporated as a nonprofit organization in February, to coalesce the concerns of a diffuse group of independent business owners into one influential voice.

Sizzling with fresh ideas about food trucks and carts, Andrew Gerson is a foodie on the move. A cofounder of Philadelphia's Mobile Food Association, which held its first meeting last month, Gerson has worked in restaurants, on gourmet food trucks, and with the healthy corner store initiative of the Food Trust, a Philadelphia organization that works with community groups to teach healthful snacking and expand access to fresh food. A resident of Mount Airy, Gerson, 29, graduated from Skidmore College in 2005 and has a master's degree in sustainable agriculture from Italy's University of Gastronomic Sciences.

So I invited the cooks and entrepreneurs behind three of the best trucks I came across to discuss the phenomenon. "The grandpa" of the movement - 29-year-old Tom McCusker of Honest Tom's; the wood-fired, dough-tossing crew from Pitruco Pizza, Nathan Winkler-Rhoades, Jonah Fliegelman, and Eric Hilkowitz; and the duo behind the relatively new Yumtown truck on 13th Street on Temple's campus, Lanie Belmont and Andrew Tantisunthorn.
