When Union midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi talks about last year's game in Los Angeles against the Galaxy, all he sees is red. The Union lost, 3-1, in the May 1 game at the Home Depot Center, dropping their record to 1-4. In that game, Los Angeles owned a 3-0 halftime lead. During the 45th minute, Miglioranzi earned a red card for a hard tackle. "It was my second red card in a 13-year career, and I don't think it will ever happen again," Miglioranzi said. "I am not that type of player.

U.S. Olympian Danny Califf scored three minutes into overtime to help Los Angeles stun Kansas City, 2-1, last night at the Rose Bowl. With the win, the Galaxy took a 4-1 points lead in the MLS Cup 2000 semifinal series. Los Angeles can advance to MLS Cup 2000 at RFK Stadium on Oct. 15 with a draw or a win Friday in Kansas City. The Wizards need to win that game to force a 20-minute sudden-death series tiebreaker that would determine which club advances to MLS Cup 2000. Califf's golden goal came off a Galaxy corner kick.

Columbus pulled out of last place and Los Angeles continued its late-season collapse as the Crew beat the Galaxy, 2-0, in a Major League Soccer game last night. The three points Columbus (12-16) gained for the victory gave the Crew 28 points in the Eastern Division, one more point than New England, and lifted them out of the cellar for the first time in months. New England, which has two games in hand, is still in a better position to make the playoffs. Only the last place team in each five-team division will fail to make the playoffs.

A goal in the 75th minute by John Harkes boosted Washington D.C. United to its second victory of the Major League Soccer season, 3-2 over the Kansas City Wizards, last night. The U.S. national team captain's shot deflected off the chest of Kansas City's Mo Johnston to give the defending MLS champions the win. Washington, which beat Miami in the MLS opener a week ago, twice came back from one-goal deficits. Johnston gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute before Roy Wegerle tied it with a penalty in the 13th.

Using cameras aboard an orbiting NASA satellite, Princeton astronomer Alicia Soderberg has captured a never-before-seen cosmic phenomenon - a burst of X rays marking the start of a supernova. These exploding stars can light up surrounding space with the power of a billion suns. But no one had ever seen the initial flash of a supernova, thought to last a few minutes before a more steady glow takes over. An astronomer could train a camera on a given galaxy for a century or more and get nothing.

GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING Forget china and crystal. Couples-to-be can now "register" for a mortgage down payment, according to U.S. News & World Report. Instead of a setting of silver or a food processor - or a lamp in the shape of the Eiffel Tower - wedding guests are encouraged to contribute to a home down-payment account. Weichert Realtors (800-872-7653) offers the program in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and four other states; Arbor National Mortgage (800-272-6791) offers it in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and six other states.

I said it before - 20 years ago - and I'll say it again: The Wookie in "Star Wars" gets a raw deal. No doubt, you've already heard that before "Star Wars" was re-released last week for the benefit of the millions who hadn't been born when it first hit the theaters, filmmaker George Lucas carefully restored the movie's color and sound and digitally doodled with its special effects to "bring it up to date. " However, he left one vital scene unchanged, and Chewbacca the Wookie remains the victim of blatant discrimination.

A year ago on Yahoo, "Bon Jourrr" posed the following question: "Do you think Philadelphia Union will ever play Real Madrid? The only game [Real] are playing this season (well, that I could find) is [against the Los Angeles] Galaxy, which is very far away from me, so I'll never be able to go. " One person, J25code2 replied: "I don't think so, the Galaxy have a lot of money, Philadelphia Union doesn't have the power that Galaxy has. " According to a source within the organization, the Union is close to proving J25code2 wrong.

Meshell Ndegeocello was in do-not-disturb-this-groove mode at the Theatre of Living Arts on Thursday night - off in some slow-turning galaxy filled with mystics, prophets and deep funk vibes, a place most listeners will visit only vicariously. The petite singer-bassist stayed near her microphone, and occasionally strapped on a weathered Fender bass. Mostly, though, she juked and bobbed in place with eyes closed and fists clenched, leaning into the syncopated cadences of her raps, or swaying with the flow as she scatted and vamped through a laid-back cover of Funkadelic's "Better By the Pound.
