Thanks to Saturday's 49-24 win at Georgia State, Villanova is 6-2 and tied for first place with New Hampshire in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 4-1 mark. The Wildcats, vying for a Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth, also are ranked in both the FCS coaches poll and the Sports Network FCS poll for the first time this season. Villanova made its debut in the coaches poll at No. 23 Monday after being in the "receiving votes" category last week. The Wildcats are 19th in the Sports Network FCS poll after being ranked 24th last week.

The Sixers announced yesterday the signing of Lanard Copeland, a 6-foot-6 rookie from Georgia State who impressed coach Jim Lynam this week at the Southern California Summer Pro League, to a one-year contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Copeland, 23, an undrafted free agent, was playing for the Lakers' entry in the league when the Sixers snatched him away. Copeland is seen as a possible backup to Hersey Hawkins, and his contractual presence puts the heat on Derek Smith's agent, Ron Grinker, to come to speedy and reasonable terms with the Sixers.

Chaz Crawford's season has mostly been about defense and rebounding, but yesterday the Drexel forward had no choice but to contribute on offense. Frank Elegar, the Dragons' leading scorer, was in foul trouble and guard Dominick Mejia was contributing very little, so the senior Crawford jumped into the breach with a season-high 17 points on a season-high 12 shots from the floor. There was a point in the Dragons' more-difficult-than-it-should-have-been 61-55 win over Georgia State at which Drexel coach Bruiser Flint looked at the 6-10 Crawford, then looked at the 6-foot-7 players trying to guard him in the post, and demanded that Crawford score.

* Temple gets some CBS run Sunday afternoon at Kansas. The Owls were great against the Syracuse zone 2 weeks ago on ESPN, but KU will challenge them on defense as Duke did. Kansas is top 10 in offensive (1.16 points per possession) and defensive (.85 PPP) efficiency. * After his perfect game at Drexel on New Year's Eve (6-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from the arc, 5-for-5 from the foul line), St. Joe's C.J. Aiken's line from the last two games is: 41 points, 17 rebounds, 10 blocks, 12-for-15 overall, 4-for-4 from three and 13-for-14 from the foul line.

Perhaps enough time has passed for Binghamton University's basketball program to begin a recovery. At least its new head coach, former Temple star Mark Macon, hopes so. Macon leads Binghamton - limping along at 4-10 and more than three months removed from the dismissal of six players, including at least three starters - against La Salle (7-5) in a home game today. After spending several years as an assistant at Temple, Georgia State and Binghamton, Macon looked forward to becoming a head coach.

Aaron Gray scored 20 points and Carl Krauser had 19 for No. 12 Pittsburgh, which shook off a 13-point deficit to remain one of three unbeatens in Division I with a 73-65 victory over DePaul (8-6) last night in Pittsburgh. Pitt, unranked as late as two weeks ago, is 13-0 for only the fourth time in its 100-year basketball history to join No. 1 Duke (15-0) and No. 2 Florida (15-0) as the only major college unbeatens. Freshman guard Levance Fields, getting more playing time as Pitt gets into its Big East schedule, scored six points during a pivotal 13-3 run midway through the second half that opened a 54-44 lead.

Indiana State's two-man show was better than Indiana's defense in the second half last night. David Moss and Tyson Schnitker combined for 28 of 42 second-half points as they led the Sycamores to a 72-67 come-from-behind upset of 18th-ranked Indiana in Terre Haute. Moss finished with 19 points and nine rebounds while Schnitker scored a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Indiana State (4-0) to its third victory in the last four meetings with Indiana (4-2)

Fifth-ranked Texas and eighth-ranked Texas Tech advanced to the final of the Big Twelve tournament with victories last night in Dallas. Stacy Stephens had 20 points and 15 rebounds, leading Texas (24-5) to a 62-47 win over Colorado (22-7). Plenette Pierson scored 22 points as Texas Tech (25-4) rallied late to defeat No. 7 Kansas State (28-3), 71-65. Texas advanced to the conference finals for the first time since 2000, but it has never won the Big Twelve tournament. Texas Tech hasn't advanced to the league final since 1999, when the Red Raiders beat Iowa State to win their second straight Big Twelve title.

Another section of the country was let in on the secret that is Drexel guard Michael Anderson over the weekend. The 5-11 point guard, who burned eventual NCAA champion Louisville in their West Regional first-round game last season, picked up where he left off Saturday night in Clemson, S.C. Anderson scored a career high 32 points on 11-for-19 shooting and added 6 rebounds and 8 assists in 39 minutes to lead the Dragons (1-1) to a hard- fought 90-89 victory over Georgia State in the third-place game of the 14th annual IPTAY tournament.

Kevin McHale is out as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. David Kahn, the new president of basketball operations, announced the move yesterday, ending McHale's 15-year stint with the Timberwolves, mostly in the front office. McHale boldly had drafted Kevin Garnett out of high school in 1995. Kahn replaced McHale in the front office in April. In 2005, McHale took over as coach after firing Flip Saunders, and the team was 19-12 the rest of the season. The Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtics star returned to the bench in December for a second stint, replacing the fired Randy Wittman.
