GREEN BAY - Aaron Rodgers came out on top in a memorable opening-night duel with Drew Brees and the Green Bay Packers came up with a goal-line stand on the final play of the game to beat the New Orleans Saints, 42-34, last night. Packers rookie receiver Randall Cobb caught a touchdown from Rodgers and ran a kickoff back 108 yards for a score in the third quarter - tying an NFL record for the longest kickoff return in history. With every rock-solid read and on-target spiral, Matt Ryan takes another step toward making everybody forget Michael Vick, Bobby Petrino, and everything else in the Atlanta Falcons' ugly recent past. The rookie quarterback out of Penn Charter and Boston College turned in another sharp performance yesterday to lift the Falcons to a 27-24 victory over Green Bay (2-3) and upstage a gritty showing by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It was the first road win of the season for the new-and-improved Falcons (3-2)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second straight week, Cam Newton threw for more than 400 yards, sidestepped pass rushers and moved the Carolina Panthers up and down the field. But leave it to Aaron Rodgers and the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers to spoil Newton's home debut. Rodgers threw for 308 yards and two scores, while the Packers withstood a 432-yard passing day from the No. 1 overall draft pick to beat the Panthers, 30-23, on Sunday. A week after throwing for 422 yards - most in league history by a rookie in his professional debut - Newton topped himself by setting an NFL rookie record for passing yardage in a game.

Stewart Bradley was back and then he was gone again. After missing all of last season with a torn ACL, the Eagles' playmaking middle linebacker returned to the field yesterday, helping his unit put the clamps on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers' lethal offense. With Bradley again stalking the middle, the Eagles held the Packers to 54 yards on their first 23 offensive plays. Held them to six first downs and just three points on their first four possessions. And then, with a little more than 5 minutes left in second quarter of a 3-3 game, Bradley collided with teammate Ernie Sims as the two were converging on Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN Brandon Graham's initiation to the NFL was purely physical. Free safety Nate Allen's was more a mental wake-up moment. Graham, whom the Eagles took with their first pick in this year's draft, got "ear-holed" by Packers right tackle Mark Tauscher. The shot was clean, part of an actual play during the Packers' first touchdown drive in the third quarter . . . but also served to even the score between the pair, since Graham had clobbered Tauscher earlier in the game.

There's not much joy in the Mile High City lately, and Broncos fans have Brett Favre to thank for their latest heartbreaking night. On the first play following the kickoff in overtime, Favre connected on an 82-yard touchdown pass with Greg Jennings and Green Bay defeated the Broncos last night, 19-13. Denver had tied the score at 13-13 on Jason Elam's 21-yard field goal as time ran out in regulation, setting the stage for another Favre comeback. Green Bay (6-1) won the coin toss and on the first play Jennings was matched up in man-to-man coverage on the left side.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy wasn't taking the bait. When asked on Monday if this season were more satisfying considering the glut of injuries the 10-6 team has endured, McCarthy wasn't in a reflective mood. In his mind, Sunday's NFC playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field against the Eagles is when the true satisfaction can begin. "I'm not satisfied," McCarthy said. "We're just getting started. " Still, even McCarthy would have to admit that two initials the Packers have become all-too familiar with are I.R. This season, 15 Packers have been placed on injured reserve, including nine who started at least one game.
