Relievers Robert Roth and Brian Rosenberg preserved the the shutout. In the ninth, Rosenberg allowed Hagerstown's two other hits before getting the final out. Louisville 8, Lehigh Valley 5 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Wes Bankston's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning produced the deciding run in the Bats' win in the International League.

Rod Roberston and Steve Scarsone had three hits apiece last night to lead the Reading Phillies over the Hagerstown Suns, 5-1, in an Eastern League game. The win was Reading's fourth straight - the team's longest winning streak since the 1989 season. TOLEDO 13, SCRANTON 11 TOLEDO, Ohio - John Paredes' two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Toledo Mud Hens over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in an International League game that lasted 3 hours, 45 minutes and featured 29 hits and 13 walks.

Centerfielder Braulio Castillo went 3 for 5 with four RBIs to lead the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons to an 11-5 victory over the Rochester Red Wings last night in an International League game. All three of Castillo's hits were doubles. READING 12, HAGERSTOWN 4 READING - Tony Longmire hit two home runs and knocked in three runs as the Reading Phillies downed the Hagerstown Suns in an Eastern League game. Teammate Rod Robertson had a homer and a single to knock in four runs.

Jeff Grotewold belted two solo home runs and scored three runs yesterday to lift the Reading Phillies to a 5-2 victory over the Hagerstown Suns in an Eastern League game. Grotewold led off the second inning with his first home run of the season and added another leadoff homer in the sixth. He walked and came around to score the first run in Reading's three-run fourth inning. PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The International League game between the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Red Barons and the Pawtucket Red Sox was postponed because of rain.

Randy O'Neal threw a six-hitter and Steve Stanicek hit a solo homer as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons defeated the Toledo Mud Hens, 2-0, yesterday in an International League game. O'Neal went the distance, striking out four and walking two. Stanicek broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, when he hit one over the left-field fence. The Reading Phillies and Hagerstown Suns were rained out last night in Hagerstown, Md. The game will not be made up, a Hagerstown spokesman said.

Pawtucket scored twice in its first at-bat but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre came back with three runs in its half of the inning and went on to a 5-4 International League victory last night. Scott Wade and Darrin Fletcher had RBI singles and Rick Schu an RBI double in the Red Barons' three-run first inning. Schu's home run in the third gave the Barons a 4-3 lead, and a fielder's choice grounder gave the Barons a 5-3 lead in the fifth. READING 12, HAGERSTOWN 2 HAGERSTOWN - The Reading Phillies pounded out 19 hits in routing the Hagerstown Suns in an Eastern League game.

In spite of four home runs, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons lost to the Louisville Redbirds, 6-4, last night in a Triple-A Alliance game. The home runs accounted for all but one of the Barons' hits. Curt Ford hit two, and John Gibbons and Chris Knabenshue had one each. HAGERSTOWN 2, READING 1 HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Pat Austin knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the third inning to give the Hagerstown Suns an Eastern League victory over the Reading Phillies.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Ryan Howard played first base against live competition Friday night for the first time since suffering a torn Achilles tendon last October. Making his second rehab appearance with the single-A Lakewood BlueClaws, Howard went 1 for 2 with a single and a strikeout before exiting the game after the fifth inning against the Hagerstown Suns, a Washington Nationals affiliate. No Suns batter knocked a ball toward Howard, but the former National League MVP said he enjoyed returning to the infield.

Six Hagerstown Suns were totally eclipsed. Joe Blanton overpowered them all in a 13-pitch, 11-strike, no-run, no-hit, two-inning rehab start last night for the Class A Lakewood Blue Claws in a dazzling display that indicated he may be back with the Phillies a lot sooner than later. "I don't know where [Phillies management] will take it from here," said Blanton, his right arm and shoulder swathed in ice after he emerged from a 1-hour workout following his brief but perfect mound performance.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Hagerstown Suns pitchers struck out 13 batters in a 2-1 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws yesterday in the South Atlantic League. Starter Jonathan Niese struck out six, and his successor, Josh Appell, struck out seven. The Suns got both runs on a double by Elvis Cruz. John Hardy doubled in a run for Lakewood. The Hagerstown-Lakewood game on Wednesday night went 17 innings and a little more than six hours before it was suspended at 12:41 a.m. tied, 7-7. League rules say an inning cannot start after 12:30 a.m. The 18th inning will resume May 6 as part of a doubleheader.

Mickey Hyde and Edwin Rosado added two hits apiece for Reading. Hyde's two- run double in the fifth inning knocked in the game-winner. Reading's Paul Fletcher (8-4) won his third straight decision, allowing one unearned run in 6 2/3 innings. Matt Stevens picked up his 12th save. Erik Schullstrom (5-7) took the loss for Hagerstown.

The home run was Scarsone's seventh. Teammate Todd Pratt hit his fourth homer in the fifth. Tim Mauser, the second of three pitchers for the Red Barons, was the winner. He went three innings and allowed three hits, two earned runs and two walks, striking out one. Darrin Chapin pitched the final two innings to earn his fourth save.

Jeff Ballard pitched a complete game yesterday afternoon as the Rochester Red Wings defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, 11-4, in the International League. Ballard (2-1) gave up six hits and a walk and struck out three. Tyrone Kingwood had three hits and Luis Mercedes and Benny DiStefano each had two hits and two RBIs to pace Rochester's 15-hit attack. Scott Wade drove in two runs with a triple and scored the other for the Red Barons during a three-run fourth inning.
