In the Girard College auditorium, Kamren Washington-Richards, 16, told a group of hundreds he was 8 when his hair began falling out. He wrung his hands and fidgeted as he got emotional while sharing his story at Monday's BEyond Expectations, a series for young men of color that promotes mental-health awareness. Washington-Richards, a student at Boys Latin of Philadelphia, was soon diagnosed with alopecia universalis, a condition that leads to hair loss. "I felt like a walking joke," he said in an interview.

THE NO. 1 COMPLAINT of pet owners is shedding, sometimes aptly referred to as "blowing coat. " And while you can reduce the risk of a "fur-nado" with regular brushing and other basic strategies, there's no magic solution to put an end to the hair flying around your home as dogs start to shed their winter coats and new hair comes in. The dirty little secret about dogs is that they all shed, but some more than others. Double-coated dogs - such as Alaskan malamutes, chow chows, Shetland sheepdogs and Siberian huskies - are the most obvious.

Q: My cat seems to be losing a lot of hair. He even has a couple of bald patches. What is the problem? - via Facebook A: It's normal for cats to shed, of course. Hairs grow and then fall out on a regular basis, adorning our "fur-niture" (that's why they call it that), floors and clothing. Sometimes cats spontaneously lose a lot of hair when they are nervous or afraid. Stress activates their arrector pili muscles, attached to the hair follicles, causing the cats to suddenly lose hairs that have been in the resting phase of the hair growth cycle.

It's that time again: New Year's resolutions are in full effect. And in between vowing to eat right, work out more, get sufficient sleep, and keep a calendar, who has time to maintain a new beauty regimen? The good news is, you won't have to. Just commit to your eyebrows. "A strong, chiseled brow is a very important beauty statement," said Karen Grant, senior global analyst and vice president of beauty at the NPD Group. In other words, brows frame the face. Did your overtweezing in the '90s leave your brows sad, sad, sad?

D EAR ABBY: When reading letters in your column concerning breast cancer, my heart goes out to every single person who has ever been diagnosed with this terrible disease. I have no respect for any man who cuts and runs when his wife is diagnosed with cancer. But what do you think about a woman who is diagnosed and whose husband remains with her through the fear and worry, the chemo, radiation, hair loss and all the follow-up? A husband who worries constantly for her and whose biggest fear is losing his wonderful wife, and after all this - she leaves him for another man?

To women struggling with hair loss, a recent announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may have sounded like good news indeed: official sanction for another new laser device that promises to stimulate hair growth. Such gadgets are marketed to women, who are rarely candidates for hair transplantation because female hair loss tends to occur all over the head, unlike male-pattern baldness. Alas, the FDA only said the LCPRO from LaserCap Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, is safe, staying silent on the effectiveness question.

As she rocked her 4-month-old infant in her arms, a visually upset young mother said, "I think my baby is falling apart and so am I. " A quick glance at this previously healthy child confirmed her fears. "He was doing great for the first few months and was so happy, but ever since I weaned him from breast feeding to formula to go back to work, he has almost become unrecognizable," she said. "He is constantly crying, is having diarrhea, and has this horrible rash on his face. I think his hair is coming out as well.

PHILADELPHIA saw some father-son love in the City of Brotherly Love over the weekend, when Bill Murray was in town. La Salle University's Kale Beers , who was doing the broadcast play-by-play during the La Salle/University of Rhode Island basketball game Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena, spotted the "Caddyshack" star in the stands. Murray, incognito under a baseball cap, watched his son, assistant men's basketball coach Luke Murray , help lead the Rhody Rams to a 59-56 win over the Explorers.

Hyper yet affectionate, the 5-year-old Chihuahua loved to cuddle with his owners perhaps as much as he enjoyed playing. Things changed in mid-November, when Max became sluggish and walked cautiously. He cried - as if in pain - whenever someone tried to pick him up, and when he defecated. His appetite was down. "He had this look of sadness," recalled his owner, Christian Torres of Philadelphia. Like most other male dogs, Max had always lifted his leg to urinate. But he had been squatting for a few months.

"I'M FROM Philly!" "Hey, went to school in Philly!" "Our agency is in Philly!" The shout-outs were plentiful to this Consumer Electronics Show attendee wearing a big "Philadelphia Daily News /philly.com" badge earlier this month in Las Vegas. And the salutations pretty much demanded that I stop, chew the fat on Philly connections and pick up on their cool gizmos at the huge confab. HOT STUFF: The smart-room-register Ecovent grabbed my gaze even before I heard that co-founders Dipul "Dip" Patel, Nick "Laus" Lancaster and Shawn "Bucky" Rose started collaborating as students at Drexel and Penn.
