PARK CITY, Utah - There's a lot of leather and sex in James Franco's life right now. The 34-year-old actor-director is part of three movies at the Sundance Film Festival that deal with sex, pornography, and bondage and discipline. "I guess I'm drawn to it," he said in an interview at the annual independent-film showcase. Franco co-directed, produced and starred in "Interior. Leather Bar.," a reimagining of the segments cut from William Friedkin's 1980 film "Cruising," so it could earn an R rating.

11.22.63. Monday, Hulu. His character in Hulu's new Stephen King series 11.22.63 is a time-traveler, but James Franco is in no hurry himself to take leave of the 21st century. "There are great things about the past, and there are horrible things about the past. I was probably born in the right time," Franco told a small group of reporters last month after a Hulu news conference. He's probably right. It's hard to imagine a movie star in the early '60s — where Franco's Jake Epping goes in 11.22.63 to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — would have made the kind of career choices the 37-year-old Franco occasionally has, including a longtime recurring role on the daytime soap General Hospital, and the recent agreement to remake the 1996 Tori Spelling movie  Mother, May I Sleep with Danger for Lifetime.

James Franco apologizes We were hoping it was a hoax: some nasty hacker. But it seems James Franco , 35, the greatest renaissance man since, like, the Renaissance, did in fact try to arrange a romantic rendezvous with a 17-year-old girl. Scottish tourist Lucy Clode , 17, met Franco briefly outside his Broadway show Of Mice and Men . They began exchanging Instagrams. Franco sent her a (clothed) selfie, then volunteered to stop by - his base desires in tow, no doubt - at Clode's hotel room.

THE MONSTERS smashing San Francisco in "Godzilla" may be too late in the view of "Palo Alto," a teen-POV profile of a community wrecked from within. In this movie, lax and/or abusive parenting has created a listless generation of teens adrift and unsupervised, stumbling in some cases toward grace, but mostly stumbling. To which the parents of Palo Alto may well ask: Says who? Says James Franco, who grew up there, and wrote a series of semiautobiographical short stories about his formative years, woven together here by Gia Coppola, third-generation director from the family of film and winemakers.

IN "PINEAPPLE EXPRESS," Seth Rogen and James Franco angered a nasty drug lord and a corrupt policeman. With their upcoming movie "The Interview," due in October, they've ticked off Kim Jong Un . North Korea is warning that the release of the comedy about a plot to kill the country's dictator would be an "act of war. " If the U.S. government doesn't block the movie's release, it will face "stern" and "merciless" retaliation, an...

James Franco gets a shave and a haircut and sets out to save John F. Kennedy from an assassin's bullet in Stephen King's time-travel drama 11.22.63 , starting Monday on Hulu. Yes, Hulu. Maybe someday a TV network will green-light a show in which one of its suits goes back in time to strangle streaming technology in its cradle, but until then a certain amount of confusion reigns. The online service owned by Disney-ABC, Fox, and Comcast's NBCUniversal continues to ramp up production on original series meant to help it compete with Netflix and Amazon, two other services that first bought TV reruns and out-of-the-theater movies and now compete with their sellers by making their own. CBS, meanwhile, has hired Bryan Fuller ( Hannibal , Pushing Daisies )

Justin Bieber does not smile. During the Purpose World Tour on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center, the 22-year-old Canadian pop star wavered between a hardened stare and a blank expression as he bounced, flipped, and falsetto-ed his way through a two-hour spectacle. It was difficult to determine whether the constant shrill screams of the mostly female crowd were in support of this newfound stoicism or a cry to let loose and take his shirt off. Either way, Bieber commanded their attention and delivered a set that both baffled and entertained.

"HOMEFRONT" addresses an urgent cinematic question. Whom has Jason Statham not yet beaten up? The answer is: rednecks in general, James Franco in particular. "Homefront" remedies that, plopping him down in Louisiana bayou country, British accent and all, for some stylish back-country brawling. The movie explains Statham's London lilt by identifying him as an Interpol agent, once undercover to bust a meth-dealing biker gang, now living in the witness-protection program.

For years, Jason Segel has proved himself a reliably funny dude, a comic foil and sometimes-leading man in rom-coms, brom-coms, and a sitcom, too. Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You Man, The Five-Year Engagement, and nine seasons' worth of the CBS hit How I Met Your Mother - the guy's comedy cred is without question. But Segel, like comic actors before him (Bill Murray and Robin Williams, to name two), was itching to try something different, something with more heft, more meaning.

Bread and circuses: They make the world go round. Sure, things weren't so hot this year when it came to bread. But the circuses were as healthy as ever in 2014, thanks to a constant supply of silly, stupid, narcissistic, and sex-obsessed celebs. But this year, the usual round of frolicking, twerking, punch-ups, meltdowns, and arrests was punctuated by some of the darkest sex scandals in recent memory. Explosive allegations brought down cultural icons as respected and admired as Bill Cosby and as popular as Stephen Collins . So we begin with the abysmal and abyssal and try to work our way up to the merely absurd.
