POP ROYALTY Janet Jackson will be the new face of Fort Washington-based weight-loss company Nutrisystem. She'll star in a national campaign hocking the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and also "write" a book about the benefits of healthy living called True You . She'll also participate in Nurtisystem's new charitable arm, Nutribank. We commend Nutrisystem's choice of spokewoman. It's impossible to forget her name. It's Janet. It also means she's competing with Charles Barkley , who just this week was named spokesman for Weight Watchers for Men. Let the dieting begin.

The Janet Jackson breast-baring fallout keeps on falling out. Michael's 37-year-old sis will not appear at Sunday's Grammy Awards, her publicist said yesterday. Janet Jackson was originally scheduled to be a presenter. But as public and political censure mounted in the days after her halftime flashdance on CBS with Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl on Sunday, she decided to skip the music-awards show, also on CBS. It had been widely reported that she was to introduce a musical tribute to Luther Vandross, but the Recording Academy had never specified which part of the show she would be presenting.

Since she famously broke away from the tight reins of the Jackson clan, shed the good-girl image she had as a child entertainer, and promoted her sensual, self-empowered smash Control in 1986, Janet Jackson has proved to be one of pop's most fiercely independent artists. Now 44 and without a label to release new music (she left her last label, claiming it bungled the promotion of Discipline in 2008), Jackson seems more confident than ever. Earlier this year, her book True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself topped the New York Times best seller list.

It took Janet Jackson three tries to get to Philadelphia. In December, it was the flu. Last week, she had a bad back. But on Monday, she made it. And the show she brought to the Spectrum with her - eight dancers, five video screens, three backup vocalists and, oh yeah, seven musicians - was a state-of-the-spectacle arena-pop extravaganza. It was a good-natured, aerobically impressive performance with lots of bright colors, fancy clothes, exploding flashpots and not a single, solitary second of spontaneity - or a word about brother Michael's travails.

"Relax, it's just sex. " So whispers Janet Jackson, owner of the nipple shield that shook a nation, at the end of a little word game she calls "Sexhibition. " The third song on her eighth album, Damita Jo, "Sexhibition" is a celebration of wanton naughtiness in which crazy Michael's little sis invokes - or is it "hides behind"? - her sexual-predator alter-ego to talk about the pleasures she intends to provide. There's no candlelit massage. No mood music. Just Jackson the sexplorer, anticipating the sexsational sexplosion her sexhibitionist sexcapades will set off. In case her intention still isn't clear, Jackson next characterizes herself as a one-woman gentleman's club.

THE LONG-POPULAR urban legend of Janet Jackson having a teenage daughter who was being raised by her older sister Rebbie, gained traction last Friday when Jackson's former brother-in-law, Young DeBarge, claimed on New York radio station WQHT that Janet and his older brother, James (who was wed to Janet for less than 3 months back in 1984), are parents of an 18-year-old named Renee. The whole story sounds fishy and it's not simply because Young has a new album to promote. If "Renee" is 18, as he stated, she would have been born three years after Janet and James allegedly split.

In a statement to "Entertainment Tonight," the newlyweds said: "The rumours regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Last year we were married in a quiet, private, and beautiful ceremony. " She's no doubt hoping that the third time will be the charm. Her first marriage, to singer James DeBarge, was annulled after just a year in 1985. She then married Rene Elizondo in 1991 and somehow kept the union secret for nine years. It's unclear exactly how long Janet, youngest of the talented Jackson clan, has been hitched this time around.

Not much emotional range in Janet Jackson's pretty face, is there? Could this be the same gal so animated in music videos? Dreamy eyes, expressionless lips, immobile jaw: This is Janet elated. Which is the identical face as Janet angry. Which is the identical face as Janet in pain. Which is . . . you get the picture. Janet Jackson's limited dramatic range sadly limits the impact of Poetic Justice, the new film by Boyz N the Hood's John Singleton. In this, her film debut, she plays a Los Angeles hairdresser and poet (named Justice!

janet. Janet Jackson (Virgin) Our Rating Guide: Most excellent Worthy Tape it or leave it You'll be sorry On her coming-out album, "Control," Janet (Miss Jackson, if you're nasty) said, "Let's Wait Awhile," when her man wanted to do the nasty. She promised she'd be worth the wait. And, like a good boy, he waited. Well, it's been seven years. No wonder Miss Jackson can't wait to scratch that itch - again and again - on her much-anticipated new record, "janet.

THE FLYERS LOGO is ready for its close-up. "I'm using my show to push my Philadelphia Flyers agenda. I'm a longtime fan. My dad had season tickets. Don't think Family Guy guru Seth MacFarlane will be asked to join the National Organization for Women anytime soon. Shock, if not exactly awe, gripped some viewers Sunday night when the first-time Oscar host launched into a surreal monologue about women. He opened with a musical tribute to actresses who opted to appear onscreen topless. It went downhill from there. Some zingers: Django is the story "of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subject to unthinkable violence, or as, Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie," said Seth, 39, referring to the two singers' troubled history.

Who's bad? Apparently, the organizers of "Michael Forever," a tribute to the late great Michael Jackson scheduled for Oct. 8 in Cardiff, Wales (who knew the Welsh dug the King of Pop so much?). Organizers for the concert have slashed ticket prices for the show, which has Christina Aguilera , Leona Lewis , Cee Lo Green , Smokey Robinson and Ne-Yo on the docket. TMZ is reporting that Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has also just signed on. Discount ticket prices are never a good sign, but even Jackson fan groups aren't jazzed about the show, with 30 fan groups boycotting, a Facebook group called "Fans Against Michael Jackson Forever Tribute" and Janet Jackson 's recent decision to pull out of the show.

Janet Jackson Janet Jackson's "Number Ones: Up Close and Personal" tour should live up to its name in the relatively intimate setting of Upper Darby's 3,000-seat Tower Theater. While the original plan was to promote her 35 worldwide No. 1 singles in 35 cities, the tour - her first in three years - has grown since launching earlier this year, and her Philly show is part of the second round of North American dates. The 45-year-old Jackson has proven her sass factor in city after city, with snazzy costume changes, snippets of music videos, a bevy of backing singers and dancers, a five-piece band and (apparently)

Each year, for decades now, fur-maker Blackglama has chosen a big lady star to be its spokes-clotheshorse. Think Kate Hepburn , Audrey Hepburn , Marlene Dietrich , Judy Garland , Sophia Loren . This year? Janet Jackson in a pert new short 'do and furs up to her nostrils. PETA, of course, had a mink about it. With reason: Janet's been on record against real fur in photo shoots. Too bad, PETA! That was then, this is cash! Girl's gonna be in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and W, and on a big Times Square billboard.
