Jennifer Hudson was the first prosecution witness to testify Monday in the trial of her brother-in-law, William Balfour, accused of murdering her mother, brother, and 7-year-old nephew in 2008. Shaken and barely able to hold back tears, Hudson, 30, spoke of her family's objections to her sister Julia's decision to marry Balfour. "None of us wanted her to marry him," she said. "We did not like how he treated her. " In his opening statement, prosecutor Veryl Gambino said Balfour threatened the family when Julia asked him to move out. "Those were not idle threats," he said.

It's virtually impossible to watch Smash star Katharine McPhee on screen and not be smitten. The American Idol alumna has a way to go before she masters the intricacies of acting, but it was thrilling to see her sing and dance - and above all be sweet, heartbroken, and sweetly heartbroken - on the first season of NBC's disarming, surprisingly enjoyable, if sometimes mediocre, musical drama, which returns for its sophomore year Tuesday night...

If the character of Effie Melody White, the impetuous girl with the supersized voice, represents the heart of Dreamgirls, then the show's showstopping song, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," speaks for its soul. Written by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen, the song made an unknown gospel singer from Houston named Jennifer Holliday a star in the original 1981 Broadway hit show. "I Am Telling You" is a volcanic warning, a desperate plea that expresses polar themes of acceptance and rejection, change and resistance, love and hate.

A Christmas story about a mother long estranged from her parents, about her son who doesn't even know his grandma and grandpa, about hard times and near crimes, Black Nativity offers a whopping serving of Yuletide emotion. And it's a musical - with plenty of wailing and rapping on the side. Inspired by Langston Hughes' play of the same name, filmmaker Kasi Lemmons centers her tale on a moody teen, Langston (R&B star Jacob Latimore), who lives with his mother, Naima (Jennifer Hudson)

The Farrelly Brothers have said they wanted the title characters in their updated The Three Stooges to be hyper-accurate reproductions of the slapstick performers. Right down to the accents. And since Stooge Larry Fine was a Philadelphia guy (the Howards hail from Brooklyn), the Farrellys wanted an actor who could mimic his accent - I guess the hair was the easy part. They cast Sean Hayes, best known for his role on the TV sitcom Will & Grace, and certainly nobody's first choice to play Larry, but give Hayes his due - maybe the best thing about The Three Stooges is his eerily pitched re-creation of Fine's unique voice.

Amanda Bynes appeared in a Manhattan court Friday in a long, blond, moppy wig after being charged with pot possession after she (allegedly) tossed a bong out of a window in front of police officers. She was set free without bail and told to show up for a July 9 court date. It was a wonderfully bizarre day in the star's life. "It was just a vase," Bynes told cops, according to assistant district attorney Chikaelo Ibeabuchi . Foxnews.com says the former Nickelodeon darling was given a psych evaluation before she was released.

*  SMASH. 9 p.m. Tuesday, NBC10. LIKE A Broadway-bound show that opens out of town - or has a rocky time in previews - NBC's "Smash" returns for its second season Tuesday still a work in progress. But at least there is progress. Maybe no one ever envisioned that a show about the making of a Broadway musical would become a metaphor for the process itself, but with creator Theresa Rebeck having exited at the end of a first season that attracted nearly as many hate-watchers as it did fans, "Smash" is working to clean up the nonmusical parts of its act. Which is also what's happening on "Bombshell," the show's Marilyn Monroe musical.

CHICAGO - A Chicago jury on Friday convicted Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson's former brother-in-law of murdering her mother, brother, and 7-year-old nephew in what prosecutors' described as an act of vengeance by a jilted husband. Hudson, who expressed her undisguised disdain for William Balfour when she took the witness stand and who endured weeks of excruciating testimony about the October 2008 killings, was visibly overcome with emotion as the verdict was read. Her eyes filled with tears and she shook her head and bit her lip. Afterward, she looked over at her sister, Julia Hudson, and smiled.
