Guillermo del Toro's new horror movie, "Crimson Peak," isn't the least bit scary, leading rabid fans to counter that it's really a Gothic romance. Bad news: It's not romantic either. Unless the romance is between del Toro and the indulgent design of his movie, an infatuation you may find yourself unable to sustain as the movie plods toward two hours. Certainly "Crimson Peak" starts out as a horror story: a girl is visited by the ghost of her dead mother, who appears as a black skull surrounded by snaky tendrils of special effects.

He Named Me Malala Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim's inspiring documentary about Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for her insistence that she - and all girls - had the right to an education. A polished piece of advocacy filmmaking. PG-13 The Martian Matt Damon gives a commanding, often darkly comic performance as an astronaut left for dead by his NASA crewmates when they beat a hasty retreat from Mars. With a limited supply of food and water and no means of communication, he has to figure out how to survive - and how to contact Mission Control - hoping they can bring him home.

Juilliard-trained. Schooled in Shakespeare, Strindberg, Oscar Wilde. Dedicated to her art, and to the idea of art. But in Interstellar , the widescreen sci-fi epic from Christopher Nolan, opening Friday, Jessica Chastain plays a scientist with a head full of equations, and questions, about time, relativity, quantum mechanics. She's an astrophysicist. A stretch, right? "Actually, I am an astrophysicist," insists the twice Oscar-nominated actress, on the phone from Los Angeles the other day. "I've been paying the bills through acting.

WAS IT JUST us or was the Oscars red carpet a little dull this year? Nobody brought the crazy. Instead, we got a parade of underfed actresses in very light colors ( Jessica Chastain , Charlize Theron , Anne Hathaway , Jennifer Lawrence , Amy Adams , etc.). Or if they weren't in light colors, they seemed to be in armor ( Halle Berry , Naomi Watts , Stacy Keibler ). The men? One boring tuxedo after another. The Oscar red-carpet pre-shows are such a big part of the festivities now that the performers are getting a little cautious - as if Joan Rivers and E!

It was Chastain vs. Chastain at the box office last weekend, as the Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain 's latest movie - the horror film Mama - dislodged the acclaimed Zero Dark Thirty from the top spot. Mama, which bears the imprimatur of producer Guillermo del Toro , opened above expectations with $28.1 million, topping director Kathryn Bigelow 's Zero Dark Thirty , which took in $17.6 million. Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger 's post-governorship comeback, The Last Stand , could prove to be just that for the action star.

THERE'S SOMETHING dead and rotting at the center of "Mama," and it isn't the ghost of the woman who lends the horror film its title. No, the cadaverous entity that animates "Mama" is, rather, the modern imagination. We have, as filmgoers, become so unused to using our own brains - to think, to feel, to visualize the invisible - that many filmmakers feel compelled to show us everything. The contemporary horror film is like porn: effective, but soul-deadening. And so it is with "Mama.

NEW YORK - Tradecraft? Jessica Chastain is an old hand. In The Debt , one of the seeming dozens of films Chastain starred in in 2011 (a couple of others: The Help , Tree of Life ), the actress played Rachel Singer, a Mossad agent in 1960s East Berlin. Emotionally scarred, Chastain's Israeli spy was nonetheless skilled, stoic, resolute. And so, when director Kathryn Bigelow contacted her about the role of a CIA operative bent on hunting down Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty , Chastain thought she could pull it off. "Of course, the character's completely different," Chastain says.
