The single best way to strengthen the country is to invest in its students, Vice President Biden told a group of professors, students, and administrators at Community College of Philadelphia on Monday. He was there to announce an Obama administration plan to spend $100 million to expand education and training programs that give community college students skills most in demand by employers. The plan includes the president's initiative to offer tuition-free education to community college students, a proposal he announced last year.

Jim and Patty Esposito met at Villanova University, sent all three of their children to school there, and have been Wildcats season-ticket holders since they graduated. They have a "Villanova room" in their Morristown, N.J., home, complete with a glass table that holds the ticket stubs from every game they have attended through the decades. They'll be in Houston on Saturday to watch their team take on Oklahoma in the Final Four, cheering along with two of their best friends, another quintessential Villanova couple, Patrick Higgins and Julianne Bigelli.

Within two minutes of Villanova's men's basketball victory over Kansas on Saturday night, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue received 280 text messages from alumni and other excited fans, looking forward to the Final Four. "Houston, here we come. " "God bless you and the entire Nova community. " "How can I get tickets?" The Villanova University president couldn't answer right away. He was busy hugging team cocaptain Ryan Arcidiacono, a moment captured on national television. For Donohue, in his 10th year as president, it was another capstone moment in an exhilarating year for the Catholic school on the Main Line.

TEACHER ANN LEANESS plans to have the time of her life today at the White House, where she is scheduled to meet Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, educator Jill Biden. "This is going to be a ton of fun," she said last night. Leaness, a 10th- and 12th-grade English teacher at Franklin Learning Center in Spring Garden, was one of 20 teachers selected nationwide to represent their school districts at the Teacher Appreciation Social at the White House. The event commemorates National Teacher Appreciation Week - May 5-10.

HARRISBURG - Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched a seven-city tour across the eastern half of Pennsylvania on Monday to call attention to Tuesday's voter registration deadline. In a brief address to about 150 campaign volunteers and supporters at the Obama campaign office here, Biden hit some of the highlights of the administration's current term: increasing college funding, defending the rights and women and gay Americans, and bringing Osama bin Laden "to justice.

In an initiative that will be highlighted Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania, the nation's nursing schools have pledged to increase training of current and future nurses about the "invisible wounds of war": post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and post-combat depression. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will speak on campus about the new program as part of a two-day national tour celebrating the one-year anniversary of their Joining Forces campaign to help soldiers and their families.

WASHINGTON - Opening another front in her nearly year-old campaign to support service families, first lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday unveiled a new push for jobs on or near military bases. She also announced plans to mark the Joining Forces campaign's first anniversary with a two-day, four-state swing next week that will include stops in election battleground states Pennsylvania and Florida and a chat with comedian Stephen Colbert on his show, The Colbert Report . The Joining Forces organization said it has lined up commitments for more than 15,000 jobs in the coming years.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jefferson Hospital physician Howard Krein , who is engaged to Ashley Biden, daughter of Vice President Joe Biden . Krein is an otolaryngologist - ear, nose and throat doctor - who studied medicine at Jefferson and has practiced there for four years. The surgeon and medical professor did not return our request for comment yesterday about his happy news. The couple got engaged in September, after dating for about a year, the Associated Press reports.

The Community College of Philadelphia will administer a $20 million U.S. Labor Department grant on behalf of the state's 14 community colleges, part of $500 million in grants that the federal department is handing out this year for workforce training for laid off workers who need to change careers. Pennsylvania's colleges will coordinate training and student support. Delaware Technical and Community College in Dover received nearly $5 million to develop training for those displaced in automotive and poultry industries.
