Jill Biden, a longtime proponent of community colleges, will deliver the keynote commencement address to this year's graduating class at Montgomery County Community College, officials said Wednesday. The address is planned for 7 p.m. May 19 at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, said Alana Mauger, college spokeswoman. Biden has been an educator for 30 years. She has spent the last 18 years teaching English at various community colleges. Since her husband became vice president, Jill Biden has spoken out in favor of community colleges, saying they equip students with the skills that businesses need to succeed in the 21st century, Mauger said.

HARRISBURG - Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched a seven-city tour across the eastern half of Pennsylvania on Monday to call attention to Tuesday's voter registration deadline. In a brief address to about 150 campaign volunteers and supporters at the Obama campaign office here, Biden hit some of the highlights of the administration's current term: increasing college funding, defending the rights and women and gay Americans, and bringing Osama bin Laden "to justice.

TEACHER ANN LEANESS plans to have the time of her life today at the White House, where she is scheduled to meet Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, educator Jill Biden. "This is going to be a ton of fun," she said last night. Leaness, a 10th- and 12th-grade English teacher at Franklin Learning Center in Spring Garden, was one of 20 teachers selected nationwide to represent their school districts at the Teacher Appreciation Social at the White House. The event commemorates National Teacher Appreciation Week - May 5-10.

The Community College of Philadelphia will administer a $20 million U.S. Labor Department grant on behalf of the state's 14 community colleges, part of $500 million in grants that the federal department is handing out this year for workforce training for laid off workers who need to change careers. Pennsylvania's colleges will coordinate training and student support. Delaware Technical and Community College in Dover received nearly $5 million to develop training for those displaced in automotive and poultry industries.

Richard Decoatsworth, the Philadelphia police officer who was shot in the face during a traffic stop, was rewarded last night for his valor by sitting right next to the first lady during the presidential address. Decoatsworth, wearing his dress blue uniform, and 19 other Americans from across the country were invited to sit in the box reserved for Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Biden. Decoatsworth, 23, was a rookie cop in September 2007 when he stopped a car in West Philadelphia and asked four teenage boys to get out. One of them pulled out a sawed-off shotgun and fired at the officer's head as he stood by his cruiser.

Jill Biden making trip to famine area WASHINGTON - Jill Biden will lead a U.S. fact-finding mission to East Africa to determine what America can do to help victims of famine sweeping the region. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the wife of Vice President Biden would visit Kenya this weekend, accompanied by the director of the U.S. Agency for International Development and other officials. Kenya borders Somalia. Clinton said Biden and the delegation would get a firsthand look at what needs to be done.

DADAAB, Kenya - Hundreds of thousands of Somali children could die in East Africa's famine unless more help arrives, a top U.S. official warned Monday in the starkest death-toll prediction yet. To highlight the crisis, the wife of Vice President Biden visited a refugee camp filled with hungry Somalis. Jill Biden is the highest-profile U.S. visitor to East Africa since the number of refugees coming across the Somali border dramatically increased in July. She said she wanted to raise awareness and persuade donors to give more.

Brett Myers moved his left heel a few inches and ended up on the World Series roster. The veteran righthander, who pitched one ineffective inning in the division series and was excluded from the National League Championship Series roster, was added to the Phillies again yesterday. He replaced utilityman Miguel Cairo. Pitching coach Rich Dubee said that the team needed an extra pitcher because of the shortage of off days during the World Series, and that Myers looked much improved while throwing two simulated games and two bullpen sessions during the NLCS.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. has suspended campaign activities for today and tomorrow after the death yesterday afternoon of his mother-in-law, Bonny Jean Jacobs. Mrs. Jacobs, 78, lived in Willow Grove, where as a young mother she stayed home to raise her daughters - Jill Biden and her four younger sisters. In an e-mail, Biden spokesman David Wade described Mrs. Jacobs as a "homemaker and avid gardener with a lifelong love of reading. " He added, "We appreciate everyone's respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time.

In an initiative that will be highlighted Wednesday at the University of Pennsylvania, the nation's nursing schools have pledged to increase training of current and future nurses about the "invisible wounds of war": post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and post-combat depression. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will speak on campus about the new program as part of a two-day national tour celebrating the one-year anniversary of their Joining Forces campaign to help soldiers and their families.

WASHINGTON - Opening another front in her nearly year-old campaign to support service families, first lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday unveiled a new push for jobs on or near military bases. She also announced plans to mark the Joining Forces campaign's first anniversary with a two-day, four-state swing next week that will include stops in election battleground states Pennsylvania and Florida and a chat with comedian Stephen Colbert on his show, The Colbert Report . The Joining Forces organization said it has lined up commitments for more than 15,000 jobs in the coming years.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jefferson Hospital physician Howard Krein , who is engaged to Ashley Biden, daughter of Vice President Joe Biden . Krein is an otolaryngologist - ear, nose and throat doctor - who studied medicine at Jefferson and has practiced there for four years. The surgeon and medical professor did not return our request for comment yesterday about his happy news. The couple got engaged in September, after dating for about a year, the Associated Press reports.
