In some ways, the $300 million, 930,000-square-foot U.S. Postal Service's processing center in Southwest Philadelphia was always Jim Gallagher's baby. Gallagher, director of the new plant's activation, shepherded others through the design, construction and relocation of Philadelphia's processing facility and its 4,000 employees from its longtime home at 30th and Market streets to a 50-acre site on Lingdbergh Boulevard near Island Avenue. He even made sure that the lobby in the new plant had a massive mural including every ZIP code in the city, with iconic images of Philadelphia.

Saying he wanted to spend more time with his family and that he didn't want to coach without his ill assistant, Sterling football coach Jim Gallagher announced his retirement yesterday. Gallagher, 60, compiled a 152-115-5 record at four schools - Sterling (105-74-2), Holy Spirit (36-11-1), Lower Cape May (3-13-1) and St. Joseph (8-17-1). "I'm a lucky man. I've made a million friends, and I've coached at a great high school and had lots of victories and championships," Gallagher said.

Described by his coach as the most exciting high school football player in South Jersey over the last two seasons, Sterling's Arthur Ellis knows that a little flair can go a long way. Whether lining up at quarterback or defensive back, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior has looked to provide a spark for the 6-1 Silver Knights. "Every snap, I think I have to do something to get my team going," Ellis said. "If I break off a long run, I make sure to thank my line for blocking. And when the line gets excited about blocking, it gets our running backs pumped up. " Ellis, who believes the camaraderie among his more than two dozen senior teammates is at the heart of Sterling's current success, has had his share of highlight-reel plays in amassing nearly 1,200 yards of total offense this season.

As comebacks and debuts go, Jim Gallagher and Mycheal Scott could not have asked for more. Gallagher made his return as head football coach at Sterling a memorable one, as the Silver Knights rolled to a 47-0 victory over visiting Haddon Township in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division game last night. A major reason for Gallagher's successful comeback was the varsity debut of Scott, a sophomore who rushed for 224 yards and four touchdowns. "I didn't expect it to be like that," said Gallagher, who served as a Sterling assistant the last four years.

Saying he is more mellow than his earlier days on the sidelines, Jim Gallagher has returned as Sterling High's head football coach - and is replacing Todd Green, the man who once succeeded him. Green, who led Sterling to NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoff berths in the last two seasons, resigned to devote more time to his family and pursue a position as a school administrator, athletic director Bill Hiltner announced last night. In seven seasons as Sterling's coach, Green compiled a 30-40 record, including consecutive 8-3 marks in the last two years.

Beneath towering trees, the small, hilly cemetery begs many questions. A weathered headstone says Maria Brown is buried there, but the inscription with the years of her life has faded. On another stone, half-buried by earth, only a first name is legible, and others toppled nearby have only the faintest etchings. The abandoned 19th-century Hayti Cemetery, believed to hold the remains of more than 100 black Civil War soldiers and escaped Southern slaves, has been neglected for years.

Cherry Hill East lifted its three-game suspension of boys' basketball coach John Valore and allowed him to work yesterday's game against visiting Lenape. East, expected to be a strong contender in the wide-open South Jersey Group 4 field, went 3-0 in the games in which assistant Jeff Rubin filled in as coach, running its winning streak to six. Valore's suspension was a personnel issue, said East athletic director Bob Hulme, who referred questions on the matter to Jim Gallagher, the school's principal.

James E. Gallagher was one of a vanishing breed of old-school, gentlemanly lawyers. Formal in speech, genteel in manner, scrupulously ethical, dignified, yet tough when he needed to be. He was sought-after as a public speaker because he could captivate audiences with his deep, sonorous oratory developed from years of elocution lessons. Gallagher, who retired from the law in 1988, died on Wednesday, his 91st birthday. He lived in Bala Cynwyd. As a member of the Center City law firm Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, Gallagher long represented the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and served as a legal advisor to Cardinals Dougherty, O'Hara and Krol.

Todd Green, a Sterling High football assistant the last four seasons, was named the school's head football coach last night. "He's very organized and has great knowledge of the game and great interpersonal skills," Sterling athletic director Bill Hiltner said. "He has all the qualities we were looking for. " Green was one of 25 candidates who had applied for the job, Hiltner said, adding that about 10 were interviewed. Green replaces Jim Gallagher, who resigned after a 25-year coaching career, including the last 15 seasons at Sterling.
