SCOUTING REPORT Kevin Boss, Oakland: Knee injury knocks him off the fantasy radar for now. Brent Celek, Eagles: Michael Vick invoked the name of former teammate Alge Crumpler when talking about his hopes for Celek this season. Celek had nearly half as many catches last year with Vick/Kolb (42) as he did in 2009 with Donovan McNabb (76). Dallas Clark, Indianapolis: The wrist injury that knocked him out for the year in Week 6 opened the door for Jacob Tamme to register 67 catches.

SAN FRANCISCO - With New Orleans poised to score on its opening possession, Donte Whitner delivered a crushing blow that knocked out running back Pierre Thomas and forced the first of five Saints turnovers. San Francisco's hard-hitting, opportunistic defense set the tone in the 49ers' thrilling 36-32 playoff win the same way it has all season. From Justin Smith and Aldon Smith harassing Drew Brees all day, to Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman shutting down the running game and Dashon Goldson making punishing hits and key plays from the secondary, the defense is the biggest reason for the resurgence in San Francisco that has the 49ers (14-3)

NEW ORLEANS - Drew Brees completed 31 of 35 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns, and the Saints set a franchise record for points and victory margin in a 62-7 demolition of the hapless Indianapolis Colts last night. For the first time as a head coach, Sean Payton spent the game up in the coaches' booth, where he could sit comfortably with his broken left leg propped up. He called the plays from there and he had to like what he saw from his new vantage point. Brees had two TD passes to Marques Colston and one to Darren Sproles in the first quarter.

FOR THE EAGLES, it likely will take a village to stop Jimmy Graham. (Angry villagers with pitchforks might work better, but the pitchforks are against the rules - just another NFL conspiracy to promote offense.) The New Orleans tight end is the best on the planet. Eagles coach Chip Kelly talks about how Saints coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees "have a lot of toys," but Graham is the most fun, a combination of speed and size (6-7) and athleticism that is unmatched in the NFL. The numbers are plain: 86 catches, 1,215 yards, 16 touchdowns.

THE BEST Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame Size: 6-6, 259. 40 time: 4.70. Projected round: 1 Mayock: "The main issue with him is durability. He ran a 4.7 at his Pro Day, so there's no way he's getting out of the first round. But the durability issue is going to hurt him a little bit. People think he's a finesse tight end who doesn't run fast enough to be a finesse tight end. He's the same size and weight as [the Patriots' 2010 second-round pick] Rob Gronkowski. He's not as good a blocker as Gronkowski, but I think the finesse label thing has more to do with the way Notre Dame used him in their offense.

Here's a tip for those postseason "Meet 'n' Greets:" Don't slap Jim Schwartz on the back. Already smarting from taking his first loss of the season to the underdog 49ers, the Detroit coach walked slowly onto the field at the conclusion of Sunday's 25-19 defeat. San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh, a first-year NFL coach who still thinks he's playing for Michigan, came leaping across the field toward Schwartz, exuberantly pumping his right fist. Harbaugh then emphatically slapped Schwartz's hand and patted him on the back.

NEW ORLEANS - The Atlanta Falcons can forget about perfection, thanks to their resurgent rivals from the City that Care Forgot. Of all the teams to end Atlanta's unbeaten run, it had to be the New Orleans Saints. And it had to be a memorable, drama-filled game that left the Falcons frustrated by the 1 meager yard they could not get to take a lead inside the final 2 minutes of a 31-27 loss Sunday. "It's very frustrating," said Falcons coach Mike Smith, who is 2-7 against the Saints and 49-15 against the rest of the NFL in his four-plus regular seasons as Atlanta coach.

Jimmy Graham caught seven passes for a career-best 146 yards and two touchdowns, and cornerback Jabari Greer made a diving, touchdown-saving pass breakup on a late fourth-down play Sunday as the New Orleans Saints held on to hand the Falcons their first loss, 31-27. Graham and his Atlanta counterpart, veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez, both were superb in a game that showcased all the intensity and momentum changes one would expect from one of the NFL's most passionate rivalries.

In their last two wins, the Eagles had trouble covering tight ends. That's a troublesome trend as they prepare for Jimmy Graham in Saturday's wild-card playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. Graham finished the season with the most receiving touchdowns in the NFL (16) and was the only tight end to top 1,000 receiving yards. Graham lines up on the line, in the slot, and split wide. Linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks have attempted to cover him. Few have succeeded. "He's not even a tight end," Eagles safety Earl Wolff said.

MYCHAL Kendricks is well aware of the "rookie wall. " You know, the one that hits rookies at about this time of year, when the college season is winding down and the NFL is really just getting started. Kendricks, 22, just hasn't had a lot of time to think about it. "I'm tired. Of course, I'm tired," Kendricks said Thursday. "That comes with the territory. But I ain't even got time to worry about that right now. " Kendricks will have his hands full on Sunday against the Cowboys, going up against seven-time Pro Bowler Jason Witten.

INDIANAPOLIS - All around the league, head coaches and offensive coordinators are looking at the Patriots' prolific two-tight end offense, rubbing their chin whiskers and saying, "Hmmm. " As in, "Hmmm, maybe we should give that a try. " The NFL is a copycat league. Original thinking went on hiatus somewhere around the disco era. When one team stumbles upon a successful idea, 10 others soon are trying it on for size. When Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are combining for 169 receptions, 2,237 yards and 24 touchdowns and helping the Patriots get to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in the last 11 years, 10 other teams are telling their scouts to go find the next Gronkowski and Hernandez.
