The Phillies on Wednesday claimed infielder Carlos Rivero off waivers from the Cleveland Indians. Rivero, who will turn 23 in May, spent the last two seasons playing shortstop at double-A Akron in the Cleveland farm system. In 2010, he hit .232 with six home runs and 43 RBIs. He made 28 errors in 107 games at short. He will likely provide depth in the middle infield at the top of the Phillies' system, an area that is thin. Last season, the Phillies used Brian Bocock in a similar role.

Phillies first-round pick Joe Savery and Rice are unbeaten after two College World Series games for the second straight year. But Savery says the Owls are a very different team this time around. As always, the Owls are loaded with pitching. But now they appear to have the bats to get them back to the best-of-three championship round for the first time since they won the 2003 title. Last night's 14-4 victory over North Carolina followed Friday's 15-10 win over Louisville. The Owls have a total of 33 hits in the two games.

BALTIMORE — In the corner of an emptying clubhouse, Jonathan Papelbon sat in a metal folding chair and hastily stuffed his belongings into a red duffel bag. That it was his most significant workload of the afternoon should not come as a surprise. True, the Phillies' bullpen inherited a tie game in the seventh inning. True, that bullpen was operating with one of its setup men unavailable and the other on a short leash. True, that bullpen already had recorded nine outs and was facing the heart of the Orioles' order in the bottom of the 10th.

THE PHILLIES did not announce Raul Valdes as Wednesday's starting pitcher until after Tuesday's game because of a pitching staff in flux. So a bullpen that can rarely provide three clean innings must chew up all nine Wednesday. The team apparently has no better option.   "That's the way we decided," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "That's what we felt comfortable with. " They waited to name Valdes in case he was needed Tuesday, but Vance Worley pitched into the seventh inning and it was unnecessary.

MINNEAPOLIS - B.J. Rosenberg was one of the first Phillies in the dugout at Target Field before Wednesday's game. As the Twins took batting practice, the rookie reliever saw Rich Dubee leaning against the railing and shuffled closer to his pitching coach for a chat. The Phillies have already used 18 pitchers in 2012, and options are limited. They have called up whom they can, will not have reinforcements for some time, and cannot swing a trade for a meaningful addition. So learning on the fly is the only reality, and any nugget gleaned from a bad outing or chat with Dubee could help.
