NEW ORLEANS - The 76ers received another coveted second-round pick. Other than that, their participation leading up to Thursday's NBA trade deadline was mostly uneventful. The Sixers acquired center Joel Anthony and a future second-round pick while being involved in a three-team deal with the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons. The 2017 second-round pick comes from the Denver Nuggets. In exchange for the former Detroit Pistons reserve center, the Sixers sent the rights of overseas player Chu Maduabum to the Houston Rockets.

On a night when the 76ers needed both Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young to come up big, coach Doug Collins had to settle for the proverbial half a loaf. Brand, the veteran power forward, came back strong from a three-point night in a Game 2, Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff loss at Miami on Monday to post team highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds in Game 3 last night at the Wells Fargo Center. But it wasn't enough as the Sixers, who led most of the way, sagged badly in the fourth quarter in losing, 100-94, and falling into a 0-3 hole in the best-of-seven series.

Score: Heat 97, Sixers 91 How it happened: For the fourth time in five games, the Sixers jumped out to a big lead early, this time 11 points midway through the first quarter. The Sixers hit eight of their first nine shots, but the Heat's somnambulant starting five morphed into its high-energy unit, began playing defense - the Sixers were fruitless in nine of 10 trips downcourt - and put together a 19-4 run, led by backup guard Mario Chalmers' eight points; he finished with 11 in the quarter and 20 in the game.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - As expected, Joel Anthony said the phone call he received Monday from Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy was "a little awkward, a little weird. " At the time, Anthony thought he was heading to the 76ers as part of a three-team trade with the Pistons and Houston Rockets. But Van Gundy called to inform him the trade was rescinded after Donatas Motiejunas, who was going to Detroit from Houston, failed to pass a physical because of a bad back. So Anthony was back here Wednesday night facing the team he expected to be traded to at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Miami Heat will stumble into the Wells Fargo Center, losers of three consecutive games. They'll be without well-liked reserve center Joel Anthony, who was traded Wednesday to the Boston Celtics. And in that night's game - 114-97 loss at the Washington Wizards - the Heat appeared sluggish and disinterested. Perfect time to face Miami, right? "If you had your choice, you would not choose to play them after they lost three in a row. Why does that make any sense?" said Sixers coach Brett Brown, whose team hosts the two-time defending NBA champions Friday night.

DALLAS - The three-team trade the 76ers struck last week is stuck in a holding pattern. It was supposed to be finalized Sunday. But the Sixers, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets agreed to a 24-hour extension that pushes the deadline back to 6 p.m. Monday. The problem is that Donatas Motiejunas, who went to Detroit from Houston, has back issues and has not been cleared to play. If he's unable to pass the physical, the trade could be voided. On Thursday, the Sixers acquired center Joel Anthony and a 2017 second-round draft pick in the deal.

MIAMI - Joel Anthony blocked Thaddeus Young's layup attempt once, then, when Young got the rebound, Anthony blocked him again. That sparked the fastbreak that led to LeBron James' thunderous alley-oop dunk that might have effectively ended this first-round series. The Heat beat the Sixers, 94-73, and took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal. James' dunk made it 37-23 in the second quarter, forced the Sixers to call timeout and punctuated the reality: The Heat has an answer for everything the Sixers can throw at it. Last night, it was Anthony, a rangy, third-year backup center and a defensive specialist.

The Grizzlies' youth movement is starting to show results. Memphis won its fourth straight game yesterday, beating the visiting Miami Heat, 102-86. Rookie O.J. Mayo had 28 points, and Rudy Gay added 18. "As long as we play together, open it up for each other making an extra pass, a screen to get your teammate open, then I feel it makes the game a lot easier for us," Mayo said. Memphis' winning streak is its longest since winning the last five games of the 2005-06 season.

Here is a look ahead to Thursday's matchup between the visiting Miami Heat and the 76ers. The Sixers were competitive in a 97-89 opener, leading by 14 points early in the second quarter, trailing by 16, and then getting to within 88-87 before being outscored by 9-2 down the stretch. In the two games, the Sixers have been outrebounded, 98-79.

Free agent center Brad Miller has agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract with the Houston Rockets. The 7-foot Miller averaged 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds for Chicago last season. Miller played in Sacramento from 2003 to 2009, including three seasons playing for current Houston coach Rick Adelman . Agent Mark Bartelstein said in a phone interview on Saturday that reuniting with Adelman was a major factor in Miller's decision. The 34-year-old Miller will back up all-star center Yao Ming, who's expected to return healthy next season after sitting out a year to recover from foot surgery.

DENVER - One by one the 76ers players, coaches and staff members on hand for a voluntary workout embraced JaKarr Sampson outside the Denver Nuggets locker room Tuesday at the Pepsi Center. "Good job, big man," Ish Smith said to Sampson, the Nuggets' starting small forward. "Keep doing your thing, except tomorrow. " "What's up, Jee-REE?" trainer Kevin Johnson playfully said to Sampson. For a moment it was like old times for the 6-foot-9, 214-pounder, who a little over a month ago was the most beloved Sixer.

A costly miscalculation by the 76ers resulted in the loss of their best perimeter defender when a three-team trade fell through. JaKarr Sampson agreed to a two-year deal with the Denver Nuggets on Monday instead of waiting to re-sign with Sixers. The 6-foot-9 guard's deal is guaranteed through the rest of the season and nonguaranteed next season. The Sixers waived Sampson on Thursday so they would have a roster spot available to take part in a three-team trade with the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons.

NEW ORLEANS - The business of basketball can be cruel. Just ask Ish Smith. The 76ers point guard has played on nine teams during his six-year career. You can also ask Jahlil Okafor. Eight months after selecting him third overall, the Sixers entertained conversations with other teams regarding his availability in a trade. The Boston Herald, citing a source, reported Friday night that the Boston Celtics had a blockbuster deal in place to acquire the center that was eventually pulled off the table.

After watching his star-studded Los Angeles Lakers drop to 1-4 on the season with a 95-86 road loss Wednesday night to the Utah Jazz, Lakers executive vice president Jim Buss had a few words to say. "You don't start 0-3 for the first time since we've owned the franchise without being on top of it," Buss told ESPNLosAngeles.com. "No matter what, you have to be aware. That doesn't mean change is coming. That just means you have to be aware. " But while fans and pundits have blamed Lakers coach Mike Brown for their struggles, Buss said he's still confident in his coach.

Thaddeus Young's odd nose butt of James Jones early in the second quarter of Game 4 appeared to instill a degree of aggressiveness in the 76ers that they lacked in the previous 13 quarters of their series against the Heat. Here's how it unfolded: Jones received a pass and head-faked a jump shot, so Young flew past him. A whistle blew, however, because Jones' foot was on the sideline. With the play stopped, Jones attempted to shoot anyway - a routine thing in such an instance - but rookie Evan Turner hacked Jones, hard, which aborted the shot attempt.
