ATLANTA - The Phillies lineup that made a dreadful, eight-game hitting slump seem like a distant memory was slightly altered for the final game of the regular season Wednesday as Shane Victorino was given a chance to rest a stiff back. Victorino was replaced in the lineup by John Mayberry Jr. , who played center field and had the challenge of facing tough Braves righthander Tim Hudson . Mayberry went into the game batting .252 against righthanders with a .333 on-base percentage and .464 slugging percentage.

SAN FRANCISCO - The signs must be painfully clear for Ben Francisco. He has been a Phillie since July 29, 2009, a toss-in in the first Cliff Lee trade who established himself as a productive bench player. And remember when he entered this season as the starting rightfielder, the heir apparent to Jayson Werth? But on Sunday, he very well could find himself in the minors for the first time in three years. Consider: He started four games during the entire month of July.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The devil of this spring training will be in the details. The fly-specks-in-pepper details. ETAs for pitchers coming off surgeries like closer Brad Lidge and "Methuselah" Moyer. When Moses came down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments, they were not as set in the stone of Mount Sinai as Charlie Manuel's starting eight. Big topics will be the spots in the order for third baseman Placido Polanco and centerfielder Shane Victorino. Four spots in the starting rotation are as set as they have been at any time in memory.

RIGHTHANDER Vance Worley has spent most of the season pitching with bone chips in his throwing elbow, but it was his stomach that gave him problems in Monday night's 6-1 loss to the Braves. The second-year starter fell ill about an hour before the game, but felt he could muster enough energy to take the mound. The Braves quickly proved otherwise, scoring four runs in 3 2/3 innings to knock him out of the game. "I definitely wasn't feeling my best, but I wanted to go out there and pitch for the team," Worley said.

The Phillies mixed in a surprise when they revealed their salary-arbitration offers Wednesday. As expected, shortstop Jimmy Rollins and closer Ryan Madson were offered arbitration, and reliever Brad Lidge and starter Roy Oswalt were not. The surprise offer went to veteran leftfielder Raul Ibanez, who made $12 million in the final year of a three-year contract last season. In all probability, the Phillies have determined that Ibanez will either reject the arbitration offer and sign elsewhere or negotiate a more favorable deal with the team if he returns in a lesser role.

ANYTIME Charlie Manuel unveils a lineup that features John Mayberry Jr., Ross Gload, Raul Ibanez and Brian Schneider, a slew of newsworthy updates is waiting to be reported. Mayberry played centerfield last night because Shane Victorino learned before the game he would begin serving a two-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing incident with the Giants on the previous road trip. The suspension was reduced from three games, meaning the Phillies will be without their top offensive performer again tonight against the Nationals.
