PHILLIPPE AUMONT following Cliff Lee in a game? Just another day in the life of your 2012 Phillies, who hope that the strangest chapter of this peculiar season has yet to be written. Aumont, who joined the Phillies in December 2009 in the trade that shipped Lee to Seattle, has quickly developed a significant role in the comeback attempt as one of Charlie Manuel's top options in the late innings of tight games. In a 3-1 win over the Marlins on Wednesday, the hulking righthander pitched a scoreless eighth to set up Jonathan Papelbon for his 34th save.

DARIN RUF arrived at Citizens Bank Park on Monday. For his first 2 days as a big leaguer, Ruf sat on the bench. He was joined by Nate Schierholtz. Although Schierholtz was activated off the disabled list on Sept. 1 and labeled himself as "100 percent" before Tuesday's game, he has started two games since Aug. 11. He played rightfield for the final two innings of the Phillies' 9-7 victory over Miami. As the Phillies begin to make things interesting in the standings - they entered play Tuesday five games back of St. Louis in the race for the National League's second wild card - Charlie Manuel appears to be in the mode of riding the proverbial hot hands.

COLE HAMELS made a point to credit the injection of youth in the Phillies roster for the team's recent winning ways after his start on Sunday. The Phils will get another shot of life from the farm system Monday in the form of one of the hottest hitters in baseball, no matter the level. Double A Reading slugger Darin Ruf will have his contract selected by the major league club on Monday. The 26-year-old Ruf, a first baseman who started playing leftfield this summer, hit a home run in the R-Phils' 5-4 loss to Trenton in Game 4 of the Eastern League playoff series.

Seven strong innings still left Cole Hamels stuck with his third straight no decision Sunday afternoon. His slim chance to capture the National League Cy Young Award has now dwindled to none. No matter, Hamels is having fun because the Phillies are winning again. The lefthander was in the home clubhouse when John Mayberry Jr. delivered a bases-loaded, game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

CINCINNATI - Last winter, the Phillies decided that John Mayberry Jr. was worthy of a starting job on the basis of a magnificent second half in 2011. Less than a month remains in 2012, and the way Charlie Manuel talks, there is still a question of how to judge Mayberry's season. "Right now he's doing real good," Manuel said. "That's how you win a job. " Since the Phillies traded two-thirds of their outfield July 31 and installed Mayberry as the everyday centerfielder, he has flourished.

CINCINNATI - Kyle Kendrick continued his path toward solidifying a spot in the 2013 starting rotation. But like many a Phillies pitcher before him this season, Kendrick got bitten both by the long ball and an unaccommodating offense behind him. He also didn't have any friends in blue, either. Kendrick and the Phils dropped a taut, 2-1, loss to the Cincinnati Reds in a game marred by a blown call by the umpiring crew. "They're human," Kendrick said. "We make mistakes and they make mistakes, too, I guess.

CINCINNATI - It has been 5 weeks since the debut of Extreme Makeover: Phillies Outfield Edition. They have played 32 games since trading All-Star outfielders Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino, but the Phils don't appear to be any closer to figuring out who can or can't take any of the three outfield spots for the 2013 season. The most obvious name and frontrunner for one of the positions returned to the field on Monday. Domonic Brown was back in the starting lineup for just the second time in the last nine games.

ATLANTA - He could stand to tell the latest chapter of this storybook season, and that was worth a smile for Erik Kratz. A future Hall of Famer had launched his shoulder into Kratz's neck just as a throw from center field popped into his mitt. "If it was up the line at all," Kratz said, "I might be dead. " Kratz laughed because that was not even his finest accomplishment in a dramatic 8-5 Phillies victory over the Braves in 10 innings. This could ultimately be remembered as the night Kratz secured a major-league job for 2013 by drilling a game-tying home run and withstanding a bone-crushing crash.

If you can hit the ball really far, it will not take long for Charlie Manuel to notice. If you can hit the ball really far and with great frequency, Manuel will do more than notice. If you can do all of this while the Phillies flounder, Manuel will start thinking big things. Such is the case with Darin Ruf, the 26-year-old slugging first baseman at double-A Reading. Manuel has watched recent video of Ruf's assault on the Eastern League. The Phillies manager is interested. "He's had an extraordinary year," Manuel said Tuesday.

This season was a month old when the Phillies traveled to Washington and found their fans could no longer run the stadium as they pleased. It was then the Nationals believed they brought legitimacy to a rivalry once decidedly one-sided. Now, they look down on the rest of baseball. There are few statements to be made when trailing by 171/2 games in August. All that remains for these Phillies is pride. After two wins to barely dampen the soaring Nationals - a crisp 4-2 decision Saturday the latest - they lead the season series.
