TATTLE UNDERSTANDS that it's our job to care about Jon Gosselin; what baffles us is why anyone else cares? Why are People and In Touch leading their July 27 issues with stories of Jon's (love) affair with 22-year-old party girl Haily Glassman and Us and Life & Style using their covers to tease the father of eight's bad behavior? Why did Yahoo! yesterday highlight a story about Jon and another Kate (one who's a reporter for the Star) on its home page? Does anyone really find this guy's life so compelling?

It was Jon and Kate plus a court date yesterday in Norristown. Although Kate Gosselin wasn't there, Family Court Judge Arthur R. Tilson ordered the stars of TLC reality show Jon and Kate Plus Eight to continue arbitration on matters related to their bitter divorce. The judge scheduled their next court session for late November. The pair, who have eight children, split in June amid rumors of marital infidelities denied by both sides. They may be TV darlings, but the brood featured on the TLC reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 will not have carte blanche when it comes to Christmas. Instead, they'll each open a few gifts ($25 or less) pulled from under the tree - finding their presents on sheets of paper marked with their names, disposing of wrapping paper between tearing frenzies, then placing the booty in their own laundry baskets - and finally share in a joint family gift. In this year's case, it's a new computer.

A London court cleared Amy Winehouse yesterday of assaulting Sherene Flash, who claimed Amy punched her in the eye after she asked the star to pose for a photo. Judge Timothy Workman said he was not convinced the punch was deliberate. Amy testified Thursday that the fan's approach scared her and that she merely tried pushing her away. "I'm relieved," the troubled blues diva said as she left the court. Swiss reject Polanski's release offer Switzerland's Federal Criminal Court in Geneva yesterday rejected an appeal by Polish-born director Roman Polanski to be released from prison while awaiting the outcome of his legal battle to stop extradition to Los Angeles for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Polanski's lawyers offered bail, house arrest, and electronic monitoring as alternatives. But the court noted the 76-year-old director's previous escape from American authorities in 1978, and concluded that "the motivation to flee is high.
