Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby practiced Monday but said he is no closer to returning from a concussion and neck injury that have sidelined him for most of the season. Coach Dan Bylsma felt with Jordan Staal and Simon Despres ready to resume skating after their injuries, it was better to include Crosby in the main practice rather than have him skate on his own. Crosby moved with plenty of energy and took part in every drill. "It was good to be out there," he said.

Despite losing their captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to finish the month unbeaten. The Pens welcomed star forward Jarome Iginla, but lost Sidney Crosby early in the first period after he was hit in the mouth by a puck. Still, the Penguins managed to overcome the injury to Crosby on Saturday for their 15th straight victory as Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third-period goals during a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders. Crosby skated off the ice with a towel covering his mouth after a slap shot by teammate Brooks Orpik deflected off a stick and hit the NHL scoring leader in the face 1 minute, 28 seconds into the game.

Like the vast majority of NHL players, the Buffalo Sabres look up to Tyler Myers, not only because the 21-year-old stands 6-foot-8, but also because he's clearly their best defenseman. Flyers followers wringing their hands over the injury status of Chris Pronger as Thursday's Game 1 of a first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Sabres approaches can take comfort: Even without Pronger, the Flyers' corps of defensemen is significantly stronger than Buffalo's. Yet, Myers figures to pose problems - at both ends of the ice. In his second season with the Sabres, the Texas-born, Calgary-raised 2008 first-round draft choice (No. 12 overall)

Sidney Crosby finished the regular season with a flourish. Next up, his Pittsburgh Penguins try to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Crosby scored twice to reach 50 goals for the first time and added three assists as visiting Pittsburgh beat the New York Islanders, 6-5, in overtime yesterday. "I put a lot of hard work in," Crosby said. "Last summer and throughout the season it was something I was trying to focus on. You're doing it to help yourself and help your team. It was a nice bonus.

It looks like the international hockey world got a glimpse of what the Buffalo Sabres have known all along about goalie Ryan Miller: This guy is really good. "We know him in this room, and we'll take him over any other goaltender right now in the game," Sabres backup goalie Patrick Lalime said yesterday. "He just showed the whole world what he can do. " As Miller spent the day traveling from the Vancouver Olympics directly to Pittsburgh to join the Sabres for their game against the Penguins tonight, the MVP of the Olympic tournament was the hot topic of discussion following the Sabres' brief practice in Buffalo.

Sidney Crosby ruled himself out for last night's game against the host New York Islanders after skating with his teammates in the morning. Crosby took the ice for the pregame skate at Nassau Coliseum and stayed out well after the rest of the Penguins went off to the dressing room. Crosby's sprained right ankle has forced him to miss six straight games and 27 of 30. He said he feels better than he has in some time, but isn't in game condition yet. "I didn't come in here expecting I would play tonight," he said.

Halak made 38 saves for his second shutout, and Montreal beat the Florida Panthers, 2-0, last night for its first home win in a month. Halak recorded his sixth NHL shutout and improved to 6-1 in his last seven starts, including a 5-4 win at Florida in his previous outing 1 week earlier. He is 4-0 overall against the Panthers. Sore nose and all, Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists to help the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins snap a mini-slump with a 4-3 victory over Buffalo on Friday night that slowed the Sabres' late-season surge. It was Crosby's third four-point game in a season in which concussion troubles have limited him to 18 games. And it came after he was held without a point in his last two outings and a day after his nose was bloodied by a puck in a 5-3 loss at the New York Islanders.
