A Camden County jury yesterday acquitted Jose Baez of murdering Juan Velez in December but convicted him of manslaughter, illegal possession of a gun and hindering apprehension. Baez, 19, of the 900 block of North 32d Street in Camden, had been accused of shooting Velez, 19, of the 1400 block of Bradley Street in Camden, during an argument at Bergen Avenue and River Road in Camden about 6 p.m. Dec. 28. Defense attorney Leonard Baker argued that Baez could not have shot Velez because he was playing pool at a friend's house in Pennsauken at the time, a contention buttressed by testimony from the friend.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Casey Anthony won't have to return to Orlando today to start serving probation on check-fraud charges. An assistant in Judge Belvin Perry's office said yesterday that a hearing on the issue has been set for tomorrow. Anthony has been out of public view since she was acquitted by a jury in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. She was convicted of lying to detectives but was released from jail because of time served.

SANFORD, Fla. - George Zimmerman is getting out of jail. Now his defense team has to worry about keeping the neighborhood-watch volunteer charged in the killing of Trayvon Martin safe on the outside. Defense attorneys for other high-profile clients who awaited trial on bail had advice for how to protect the man whose shooting of the unarmed black 17-year-old sparked nationwide protests: Get him out of Florida, keep him from going out in public, and never leave him alone. "He clearly puts himself in jeopardy unless he takes precautions," said New York lawyer Barry Slotnick, who represented subway shooter Bernhard Goetz in the 1980s.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Casey Anthony did not take the stand in her murder trial as defense attorneys wrapped up their case yesterday without presenting concrete evidence that Anthony's 2-year-old daughter Caylee wasn't killed but accidentally drowned. Her attorneys also never produced any witnesses bolstering the claim made in last month's opening statements that Anthony, 25, had acted without apparent remorse in the weeks after her daughter's death because she had been molested by her father as a child, resulting in emotional problems.

ORLANDO, Fla. - This is what freedom looks like for Casey Anthony: $537.68 from her jail account, no job, estranged parents, a criminal record, lawsuits pending against her and the scorn of multitudes who think she got away with murder. She quickly gave reporters the slip after walking out of jail yesterday, but whatever life she manages to build for herself will be lived under a media microscope and the shadow of countless threats. Experts who have helped other notorious defendants through rough times say that she will have opportunities as well, but it won't be easy for the 25-year-old, who was found not guilty of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but was convicted of lying to investigators.
