The Memphis Grizzlies signed restricted free-agent forward Josh Smith, of the Atlanta Hawks, to an offer sheet yesterday. Atlanta has 7 days to match the offer. Neither Wallace Prather, Smith's agent, nor the Grizzlies would give details and the Hawks declined to comment. The Hawks drafted the 6-9, 235-pound Smith out of high school in the first round in 2004. Smith, who once was considered by the 76ers, averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in helping the Hawks make the playoffs last season.

MILWAUKEE - Websites have speculated about a possible trade that would send Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes to Atlanta for soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Josh Smith, but such a deal would not interest the 76ers, according to two league sources with knowledge of the situation. "Why would the Sixers be interested in making a deal for a player who can walk at the end of the season and leave them holding nothing but the bag?" one source said. "I don't see where that makes sense for them.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Remember those 76ers who went 0-17 for the worst start in franchise history?  Now they're on a roll.  They have two wins in their last three games after beating the struggling Detroit Pistons, 108-101, in overtime Saturday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Sixers, who finally cracked the win column by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder, are 2-18. Both of their wins came on the road. "We are on a great little run," said point guard Michael Carter-Wiliams, who finished with 20 points, 15 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocked shots and 7 turnovers.

Small ball did not work. The 76ers tried to combat the Detroit Pistons' towering frontcourt with a small athletic lineup. The only problem was the Sixers had a tough time grabbing rebounds. And despite how frantic and competitive they made things, they were just eventually too small. The Pistons prevailed, 114-104, Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center, thanks in large part to holding a 62-42 rebounding advantage. "The thing that's hard is when you know how you are going to die, you hope that you can fix something or you can do something," Sixers coach Brett Brown said about the Sixers' rebounding woes.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Scrambling. It is a word that seems to perfectly fit the 76ers' defense so far this early season. While the game plan is to stop the damage that is done to them in the paint - as they don't have anyone on the roster who can protect the rim - that doesn't mean they intend to allow teams to pile up tremendous numbers from the outside. But that is what has been happening way too many times so far this season and it reared its ugly head again yesterday against the Detroit Pistons.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The 76ers are a scrappy bunch. The Detroit Pistons boast a towering frontcourt. On Sunday, the tall guys rolled to a one-sided, 115-100 victory at the Palace of Auburn Hills. "They did a good job of exploiting us inside at first," said Thaddeus Young, the Sixers power forward. "Then we kind of got back into the game. But they were just a big team. " The Sixers (6-12) have lost four consecutive games and 10 of their last 12. They are 3-12 since they won the first three games of the season.

Wissahickon's Josh Smith is only the team's Wildcat quarterback, so he typically just runs the ball. Smith, however, delivered a key touchdown pass in the fourth quarter Friday night to help the Trojans finish off visiting Cheltenham, 41-33, in a Suburban One American matchup. Smith, who had five carries for 87 yards and a touchdown, completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jared Reed in the fourth quarter. Reed caught two scoring passes.
