Raging Rosie O'Donnell, she of the machine-gun opinions, will leave a void very difficult to fill when she departs The View in mid-June. Where should ABC and producer Barbara Walters look for a replacement for the tart-tongued Rosie on the late-morning gabathon? It will take a special kind of person to mesh with the other three cohosts - Walters, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Behar - and with the millions of women who make up the program's audience. Why be cautious? It might just be time for The View to shake things up with a bold choice.

Palin with Brolin, live: It's Saturday night Sarah Palin will, indeed, appear tonight on Saturday Night Live, a campaign rep said. She will join host Josh Brolin, who plays George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's W. Meanwhile, comedian Tina Fey, who has gained an almost religious following for her depiction of Palin's mellifluous tones, says doing Palin's voice is nothing special. "Not since Sling Blade has there been a voice that anybody can do," Fey said on CBS's Late Show With David Letterman.

I THINK I got muzzled while appearing on "The View. " Ironically, I was on to talk about the need for less censorship and more-free conversation on matters of public interest. Two years ago, I wrote a book called "Muzzled," in which I argued that political correctness is so pervasive in the United States that it threatens our ability to win the war on terror. The book briefly made the New York Times best-seller list, and its recent paperback release accounted for my invitation for a discussion with Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Kim Coles (in Rosie's old seat)

IT MUST be hard to be a menopausal liberal. How else to explain the collective meltdown being experienced by women of a certain age and political stripe in the waning days of this midterm election? The examples of hormonal angst are too numerous to list, so I'll just focus on a few of the more amusing ones. JOY BEHAR VS. SHARRON ANGLE: A lot of people, not just women, hate the GOP Senate candidate from Nevada. She's been ridiculed as an "Annie Get Your 'Second Amendment Remedies,' " a racist who can't tell chalupas from chow mein and a woman who thinks rape victims should be drinking lemonade.

The turning point for the networks occurred Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., when ABC's silly "America's Home Videos" actually beat CBS' long-running ratings champ, "60 Minutes. " Coupled with that breakthrough was the fact that the supercharged "Videos" couldn't hold the audience for the ABC show that regularly followed it on the schedule, the new "Elvis. " Instead, the viewers changed channels to watch Fox Broadcasting's "The Simpsons. " This viewing flow delivered a message to network programmers: Viewers were ready for more innovative, rule-breaking and creative programs.
