Cole Hamels and Carlos Ruiz were named the Phillies most valuable pitcher and player, respectively, on Monday by the Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hamels, 15-6 with a 3.05 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 203 1/3 innings, won the Steve Carlton Most Valuable Pitcher Award unanimously. The lefthander has two shutouts in 29 starts. First-time all-star Ruiz won the Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award. The catcher is batting .328 with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a .938 OPS - all career highs.

MIAMI - A person familiar with the negotiations says third baseman Placido Polanco has agreed to terms with the Miami Marlins. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the Marlins hadn't announced a deal. Polanco, 37, battled injuries this year and hit .257 with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 90 games with the Phillies. The 15-year veteran is a career .299 hitter with 103 homers. The deal solidifies the Marlins' lineup following an offseason payroll purge.

If you are heading to tonight's exhibition game against the Pirates at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies will be using what could be their lineup for Opening Day. Charlie Manuel has talked this weekend about using Juan Pierre at the top of the lineup and moving Jimmy Rollins down to third. Manuel used 108 different lineups in the regular season last year, but the batting order he used most often (10 times) had Rollins batting third. Another interesting quirk, when Pierre bats first, the Phillies might bat 5 straight hitters who average under 10 HRs per season (Carlos Ruiz, Freddy Galvis, Pitcher, Pierre and Polanco)

JIMMY ROLLINS reached the 1,200 milestone in runs last week with a solo homer against the Reds at Citizens Bank Park. He is just the second Phillie to reach that level, joining Mike Schmidt (1,506). And among all current National League players, only the Rockies' Todd Helton has crossed the plate more times for a senior-circuit team, thanks in no small part to former Cardinal Albert Pujols taking the money and running to the Angels two seasons ago. Here are the active players who have scored 800 or more runs while playing for NL teams (*currently on DL; through Thursday)

The Phillies improved to 16-19, beating the Padres 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday afternoon. Cole Hamels, fresh off a five-game suspension for intentionally hitting Nationals prospect Bryce Harper with a pitch, held San Diego to one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. Jose Contreras allowed a run in the eighth, but Antonio Bastardo retired the final out of the frame with a runner on first to turn things over to Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon struck out two of the three batters he faced to record his 10th save in as many attempts.

A SPRING that has had more than its share of sour notes ended with a nice surprise. The Phillies announced after Tuesday night's game that lefthanded reliever Joe Savery had made the roster. Though he pitched in four games as a call-up last September, making the club out of the gate represents another step in Savery's career. The Phillies drafted Savery as a first baseman in the 2007 first round. "He's a good story," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's come a long way. " Veterans Scott Podsednik, Hector Luna and Raul Valdes did not make the club.

When Roy Halladay is at his best he can frequently help overcome the offensive inefficiency of the Phillies. These days if the righthander isn't totally on his game, winning can be an iffy proposition. For the second straight outing, Halladay wasn't his usual dominating self, and coupled with another lackluster offensive effort it equaled the end of the Phillies' modest two-game winning streak. Halladay allowed three runs in seven innings as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Phillies, 5-1 on Friday in the first of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
