OKLAHOMA STATE'S fifth-year senior, who turned 28 on Oct. 14, was older than 14 of the NFL quarterbacks who started in Week 1. Shades of Chris Weinke, who became the oldest player to win the Heisman Trophy as a 28-year-old for Florida State in 2000 after pursuing a baseball career. The year before, he helped the Seminoles win a national title. Now, Weeden is trying to do both in the same season. The Cowboys, 10-0 for the first time, are coming off a 66-6 win at Texas Tech. It's the sixth time they've scored at least 52. They haven't been held under 30. Last year, in his first full season as a starter since 2001, Weeden became OSU's first all-league QB since the 1930s.

LAST YEAR, Cleveland's Josh Gordon was the Lamborghini of wide receivers. Led the league in receiving yards despite having Moe, Larry and Hoyer as his quarterbacks. Posted consecutive 200-yard games, something no one had ever done. This year, the Lamborghini has some rust on it. It has to. Gordon was suspended the first 10 games for repeated drug violations - which also dogged him in college - and watched as the Browns somehow put together a respectable 6-4 record. It's a mark that would have been better except for two puzzling losses to the bad Jaguars and undermanned Texans by a combined 47-13.

Papa always told me "life ain't fair. " That was usually right after he stole my last French fry, or reneged on his promise to take me on a blimp ride after I finally made it through a semester of elementary school without an "N" (not satisfactory) on my self-discipline grade. Indeed, life could be cruel growing up on the mean streets of Coral Gables, Fla. But it steeled me for the many trials I've confronted later in life. Like now, when I compete in three fantasy leagues without Peyton Manning on my side.

You can never have too many good wide receivers. You can't in the modern era of the NFL with the league nearing a 60-40 balance in favor of the pass. So while the Eagles would appear to be set at the position and not in the market for a first-round talent, if Justin Blackmon or Michael Floyd were to fall to them at No. 15 you can bet your Jeremy Maclin jersey that Andy Reid will snap up either one. Taking a receiver with the top pick in this year's draft - which opens with the first round Thursday - would not make sense for the Eagles if they were looking to address their most significant holes from a season ago. That would be on defense at linebacker, safety, and defensive tackle - and, sure, why not, cornerback, too. But the Eagles have been hammering the mantra of taking the best available player for months, and again, if Blackmon or Floyd is there, you have to take him. Judging by some mock drafts, neither will be available.
