Friday was a day of big deals in Major League Baseball. The big one was the seven-year, $180 million contract for Tigers righthander Justin Verlander. The pact broke the record for pitchers set earlier this offseason when Seattle's Felix Hernandez agreed to a $175 million, seven-year contract. Verlander's contract was set to expire after next season. Now it lasts through at least 2019. "I wondered what it would be like to test free agency, but the pull of Detroit was too much," the Tigers' ace said Friday.

DETROIT - One moment, Justin Verlander and the Tigers were on the verge of watching their season slip away. After a double play and a lucky bounce, they were headed back to Texas. Verlander helped save Detroit's season with a gutsy effort and the Tigers hit for a sudden cycle to break away in a 7-5 victory Thursday that cut the Rangers' lead to 3-2 in the American League Championship Series. Delmon Young hit two of Detroit's four homers and Miguel Cabrera had a tiebreaking double in the sixth inning - thanks to a bizarre bounce off third base.

DETROIT - Justin Verlander struck out 11 in eight gritty innings and Jose Valverde stopped a Yankees rally for the second straight night, whiffing Derek Jeter with two on to close out the Detroit Tigers' 5-4 victory over New York on Monday. Delmon Young hit a tiebreaking homer in seventh off Rafael Soriano and the Tigers took a two-games-to-one series lead in the best-of-five American League division series, pushing the Yankees to the brink of elimination. Verlander and Yankees ace CC Sabathia were back on the mound after their Game 1 matchup was halted early by bad weather Friday night.

ED BARKOWITZ: IT'S IRONIC THAT banished centerfielder Melky Cabrera's All-Star Game MVP performance gave the Giants homefield advantage, which will make for a long World Series. Picking against Justin Verlander is akin to tugging on Superman's cape or spitting into the wind. It's just not a good idea. The Tigers stud is on one of those Orel Hershiser/Josh Beckett-like postseason runs with a 3-0 record and a 0.74 ERA in three postseason starts. This, after winning each of his last four starts and posting a 0.64 ERA. The guy is scorching.

The eight sweeps approached the nine sweeps of series of at least two games on May 30, 2013, Michael Hughes of the Elias Sports Bureau said.

NEW YORK - Alex Rodriguez returned to the Yankees' starting lineup for their AL Championship Series opener against Detroit on Saturday night, dropped to sixth in the batting order. Rodriguez was 2 for 16 with no RBIs in the division series against Baltimore, going hitless in 12 at-bats against righthanded pitchers with nine strikeouts. Manager Joe Girardi pinch-hit for him in Games 3 and 4. "This is a guy we know can do a lot of damage," Girardi said. "I talk about sometimes going with my gut and evaluating what I see and different things you take into account when you made the lineup up, talk to people, and I think he's raring to go. " The 37-year-old third baseman had not hit as low as sixth since Joe Torre batted him eighth in the fourth and final game of the 2006 AL division series against the Tigers, according to Stats L.L.C.

TIGERS MANAGER Jim Leyland is having a heck of a run with umpires. On June 2, first-base ump Jim Joyce botched a call that cost Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game against the Indians. Joyce admitted the mistake and apologized. On Saturday, home plate ump Gary Cederstrom blew a costly third-strike call on Tigers leftfielder Johnny Damon with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. The Braves won the game, 4-3. Cederstrom also admitted he'd made a mistake and apologized.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander is headed to the disabled list for the first time in his major- league career. The Tigers said Thursday the 32-year-old righthander won't be on the active roster for the opener Monday against Minnesota because of tightness in his right triceps. He was scratched from his Thursday start and no timetable has been announced for when he will pitch again. "I don't think this is going to be a long-term issue," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "After throwing yesterday, he said he felt as good or better today.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cesar Hernandez is out of minor-league options, meaning this is a make-or-break spring for the 24-year-old competing for a Phillies bench spot. With Chase Utley still working his way back from a right- ankle sprain, Hernandez has gotten extra playing time at second base through the first nine games of Grapefruit League play. Manager Ryne Sandberg likes Hernandez's ability to switch-hit as well as his range and defense in the field. "It is a big spring for him," Sandberg said.

NOTE TO VISITING CELEBS: If there's one way to get Philadelphians to love you, it's to publicly disparage any football team that is not the Eagles. Yesterday, comedian Chris Rock , a brilliant man, started his introduction of his new movie, "Top Five," with a rousing "Go Eagles. F--- the Ravens. " The crowd at the Ritz Five went wild. Of course, the next stop on Rock's five-city promotional blitz was Baltimore, where he tweeted, "You guys were great. " Could it be that Rock was being insincere about his distaste for the Ravens in order to promote his movie?

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Lefthander Cliff Lee completed a dominant performance in spring training Wednesday in his last start before his opening-day assignment. Lee allowed one run on six hits in five innings during a 1-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Bright House Field. "I have felt good the whole time, and spring training for me is over now and it is on to the real games," Lee said. "I am looking forward to it. " Lee will pitch Monday against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas. Although it's dangerous to get too caught up in spring-training statistics, Lee had a 2.55 ERA in 242/3 innings.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Nights like last night can make a man think about getting a little skin in the game. Most online sports books are offering 60-to-1 odds on the Phillies winning the 2014 World Series, and when you watch Cliff Lee walk to the clubhouse with a 3-1 lead against Toronto's R.A. Dickey, you can't help but think. You know . . . There are plenty of good reasons why you can get these kinds of odds. They are the same reasons why the Phillies regular-season over/under is currently 76.5 wins at Bovada.com.

SUPER-DUPER model Kate Upton was in Philadelphia this weekend with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Detroit Tiger Justin Verlander , who was in town for core-muscle surgery last week. I hear that on Friday the duo hit up the Melting Pot (1219 Filbert St.) and on Saturday they chose Del Frisco's (1426-28 Chestnut St.). My tipster says that Upton and Verlander and three others sat in the mezzanine and that she kept it low-key, opting for not much makeup. Many people dining near her didn't even recognize her. I hear Upton and party dined on the calamari and the cheesesteak dumplings, as well as a bottle of cab that got dropped off at the table.

JOSH DONALDSON performed like an All-Star, though he'll be spending his break somewhere other than Citi Field in New York. Donaldson homered, then blooped an RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning as the Oakland Athletics beat visiting Boston, 3-2, yesterday despite a stellar start by Red Sox rookie Brandon Workman. "I got jammed and was able to dink it in," Donaldson said. "It was awesome. " He heads into the break hitting .310 with 16 homers and 61 RBI. Numbers only AL All-Star third basemen Miguel Cabrera and backup Manny Machado can rival.

Pittsburgh pitcher Mark Melancon was picked Sunday as a replacement for the National League all-star team, giving the Pirates five players in the game for the first time since 1972. National League manager Bruce Bochy also selected Sergio Romo, his Giants closer, as a replacement pick Sunday along with Braves catcher Brian McCann, who will replace teammate Freddie Freeman, who's out with a jammed left thumb. Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke and Nationals righthander Jordan Zimmermann, who also were on the original NL all-star roster, are hurt and will miss Tuesday night's game at New York's Citi Field.

TIM HUDSON was a dual threat in his 200th career win, combining with Anthony Varvaro on a three-hitter while hitting a homer and a double to lead the Atlanta Braves to an 8-1 win over the visiting Washington Nationals last night. Hudson (3-1) dominated the Nationals through seven innings, striking out six and walking two while giving up one run. One of the three hits he allowed was an infield single by Denard Span. Hudson's bat almost stole the night. He led off the second with a double to leftfield off Gio Gonzalez (2-2)
