Kyle Boller says all the right things, but he hasn't made all the right throws as the Baltimore Ravens' starting quarterback. The second-year signal-caller has been slow to develop on a team that has a Super Bowl defense but an inconsistent offense. Boller's learning curve will be tested today when the Ravens (4-2) visit the Eagles (6-0) at Lincoln Financial Field. Baltimore doesn't have a wealth of offensive playmakers, especially with all-pro running back Jamal Lewis sitting out the second game of a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

Joe Flacco as the Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback? According to reports, it could happen. Kyle Boller might be sidelined for the season because of a right shoulder injury, according to ESPN.com. ESPN, citing a source, reported Boller is putting off surgery for now and Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he could return sometime this season. With backup Troy Smith recovering from a viral infection, Flacco, a rookie from Audubon, N.J., may have to play most or all of tonight's preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

OK folks, it's Week 7 of the NFL season, which means it's time for America's favorite game show: Wheel . . . of . . . Quarterbacks! You know that the Washington Redskins have decided that John Beck (he of the 0-4 record as a Dolphins starter) is an upgrade over Rex Grossman (he of the four picks against the Eagles and Kurt Coleman 's new best friend). Good luck with that! And that Tim Tebow will be descending from the clouds on a ray of light to take the snaps for the Denver Broncos against Miami (on the day the Dolphins honor Tebow's 2008 national championship Florida team)

ON HIS SECOND play of his first NFL practice with the Oakland Raiders, Terrelle Pryor fumbled the snap and had to fall on the ball. He had one more fumbled snap and a few errant passes in his 16 plays during team sessions, looking more like someone who hadn't played football since January than a future franchise quarterback. That's all to be expected considering he just jumped right in on his first day with the Raiders, while most everyone else has had more than 4 weeks of training camp.

The Oakland Raiders made the off-field equivalent of a Hail Mary pass on Tuesday, sending a first-round draft pick to Cincinnati for holdout quarterback Carson Palmer in a bold move to replace injured starter Jason Campbell. The Bengals had been adamant that they would not trade Palmer, who was holding out to force a deal. But owner Mike Brown reversed course when the Raiders offered a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional pick in the 2013 draft - one that might become another first rounder - for Palmer.

In one of my leagues, our commissioner decided to try out a new option offered by the league management site to add a head coach to our rosters. Each team win yields seven points, with a loss registering a goose egg. I wasn't in favor of this tricked-up option, but a collective shrug from the rest of the guys allowed the commish to institute the change. The first challenge presented itself in the draft, since it is awfully hard to determine the proper draft position for a head coach.

I've heard several commentators refer to this as the "golden age" of NFL quarterbacking, or some hyperbolic variant of the same theme. I don't think they are watching the same games I am. To be sure, it doesn't get much better than Drew Brees' five-touchdown performance Sunday night. We are obviously witnessing two of the all-time greats in Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Michael Vick can be spectacular, Ben Roethlisberger has some serious skins on the wall, and only a neck injury is keeping Peyton Manning from continuing to rewrite the record book.

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor agreed to a 4-year contract with the Oakland Raiders yesterday, 3 days after being picked in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft. A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the deal to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced by the team. Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Pryor had arrived in the Bay Area and was expected to sign a deal last night. Pryor can start practicing with Oakland today.

Jake Delhomme wasn't about to be upstaged by a backup quarterback who hadn't tossed a touchdown pass since Christmas. Delhomme threw for a career-high 365 yards and two touchdowns, and Carolina slipped past the host Baltimore Ravens, 23-21, yesterday for its fourth straight win. After Ravens quarterback Steve McNair left with a concussion and sprained neck in the first quarter, Kyle Boller took over. A starter for 3 years before being displaced by McNair, Boller threw three touchdown passes to provide Baltimore (4-2)
