Kyle Lowry loves playing basketball and especially in his hometown of Philadelphia, but the Toronto Raptors point guard, a product of Cardinal Dougherty and Villanova, was on board with sitting out Monday against the 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center. Raptors coach Dwane Casey said Lowry had various things he was dealing with. "Nothing major, multiple nicks, bumps, bruises and soreness," Casey said. "I know what is best for me and I know the coaches and organization know what is best for me," said Lowry, who sat out his second straight game.

His rookie season was cut short by injury, and now Kyle Lowry's second season in the NBA is marked by uncertainty. Still, coming home to Philadelphia as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies for tonight's game against the 76ers will be much better for Lowry than his return a year ago, when a broken left wrist had limiting him to 10 games all season. Lowry is a true Philadelphian, having starred at Cardinal Dougherty High School before attending Villanova for two seasons. He was a first-round draft pick in 2006, the 24th selection.

Any time Kyle Lowry and Sean Singletary meet, Philadelphia's premier high school point guards remind each other who got the best of whom. Tomorrow night, Cardinal Dougherty's Lowry and Penn Charter's Singletary are scheduled to meet again. In a much-anticipated showdown that will showcase the skill and speed of both nationally recognized point guards, Dougherty, ranked No. 1 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, faces No. 6 Penn Charter in the Arcadia Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic at Arcadia University at 8 p.m. The buzz surrounding the game, which is the nightcap of a doubleheader, has started, and Lowry and Singletary, the headliners, are the reason.

The contrast was as stark as it was stunning. As the 76ers suffered their eighth straight loss to open the season Wednesday night, a 119-103 decision to Toronto, they fielded a starting lineup in which the best two players were rookies - one of them being an undrafted free agent in T.J. McConnell. Meanwhile, the Raptors rolled out a veteran lineup led by former NBA all-stars Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. But the Raptors (6-3) were far from being in the mood to nurture or even feel sorry for the Sixers, who were minus Nerlens Noel (sore wrists)

Jose Calderon collected 18 points, 14 assists, and 10 rebounds to lead shorthanded Toronto over the visiting Houston Rockets, 103-96, on Sunday. Calderon started for the third consecutive game in place of Kyle Lowry, who has a tear in his right triceps. Andrea Bargnani also is out with a torn ligament in his right elbow. Calderon held Rockets guard Jeremy Lin to just seven points and two assists the day before Lin faces his former team, the New York Knicks, at Madison Square Garden.

WHERE IT WENT wrong for the 76ers against the visiting Toronto Raptors last night at the Wells Fargo Center was still kind of a mystery after the game. After all, the Sixers turned the ball over only 10 times, tying a season low. They didn't give up too many threes (eight), won the battle of the paint by 20 (56-36) and got balanced scoring, with five players in double figures. But once you get to the performance of Toronto's starting backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, the Raptors' 104-95 win comes more into focus.

TORONTO - It can be argued that the 76ers are destined to lose all three games of their current road trip. Wednesday's 125-114 loss to the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre was anticipated. They are also expected to suffer losses to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday and the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday. And that's OK for the Sixers (17-61), who aren't basing performances on wins and losses. With four games left, they're all but certain to finish with the league's second-worst record behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

Kyle Lowry announced yesterday that he will keep his name in the NBA draft and give up his final two years of eligibility at Villanova. The sophomore point guard had until tomorrow to withdraw his name from the June 28 draft. "There wasn't any one thing" that led to the final decision, said Dave Distel, who coached Lowry at Cardinal Dougherty High School and is one of his advisers. "There were a lot of steps. I've been very proud of him and the way he's done this, and [Villanova coach]

Kyle Lowry, who proved the skeptics wrong when he decided to skip his final two seasons at Villanova, then became a first-round draft choice in last month's NBA draft, yesterday signed with the Memphis Grizzlies, the team that made him the 24th pick overall. Lowry signed a two-year deal with team options for the third and fourth years, the Associated Press reported. Financial terms weren't released. Lowry played two seasons at Villanova, averaging 9.5 points on 44.9 percent shooting, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
