Los Angeles Lakers general manager Jerry West planned to meet today with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's attorney to continue negotiations for a new two-year contract, The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday. The newspaper said that Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's oldest player at age 40, might be considering signing for another two seasons despite his talk of retirement following the 1987-88 season. The Times, quoting sources with the team, said the Lakers were attempting to negotiate a deferred compensation deal with Abdul-Jabbar that could run across some roadblocks since NBA rules stipulate that teams only can defer 30 percent of a player's contract.

The atmosphere was amazing even if the basketball was sometimes nauseating. In fact, the first half of the 76ers' first game in the Las Vegas summer league Saturday night against the Los Angeles Lakers looked a lot like the basketball we've seen far too often over the last three seasons at the Wells Fargo Center. Clank, clank, clank went the basketball. The result, of course, did not matter. This was a bunch of incoming rookies and an assortment of other players in the early stages of their NBA careers.

LAS VEGAS - Ben Simmons made it seem as if Saturday's NBA summer league matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers didn't mean anything more to him than any other game. But the 76ers' first overall draft pick had to know it was more than just any summer league game. It was the headline matchup of the Las Vegas Summer League. It was a game that featured Simmons and Brandon Ingram, who went second overall to the Lakers. And it ended with last summer's second overall pick, D'Angelo Russell, hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Lakers a 70-69 victory at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.

ASSOCIATED PRESS DENVER - D.J. Augustin scored 22 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead six Denver players in double figures, and the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 117-107 on Wednesday night in Kobe Bryant's final game at the Pepsi Center. Emmanuel Mudiay added 22 points and the Nuggets used a 10-0 run midway through the final quarter to gain some separation. Bryant finished with five points and didn't play in the second half because of a sore right shoulder.

TORONTO - Kobe Bryant was more than 15 minutes late for his media availability, and it didn't matter. This was Bryant's day. Just like the NBA all-star weekend here is actually an unofficial Kobe Bryant event. Some reporters applauded as the Los Angeles Lakers megastar finally took his seat in a Sheraton Centre Toronto ballroom late Friday morning. Journalists from 40 countries in town for the weekend turned Bryant's first news conference of his 18th All-Star Game into the latest stop of a farewell tour that began when he announced his retirement in November.

LOS ANGELES - Heading into Friday's matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, things were looking up for the 76ers. They had won two of their last three games and were about to face a Lakers squad they had already defeated Dec. 1. However, the Lakers broke the game open with a 15-2 fourth-quarter run that propelled them to a 93-84 victory at the Staples Center. The run ended with the Lakers up, 88-72, after a Lou Williams turnaround jumper with 4 minutes, 32 seconds left. The loss denied the Sixers (3-32)

The 76ers avoided sole possession of a dubious place in the NBA record book on a night when they honored Kobe Bryant and the late Moses Malone. They snapped two losing streaks with their first victory of the season in a 103-91 defeat of Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers (1-18) entered the night one loss away from breaking the NBA record for consecutive losses to start the season. They tied the mark of 18 consecutive setbacks that was set by the 2009-10 New Jersey Nets.

Kobe Bryant has always had an affinity for his high school, Lower Merion, and the community feels the same way about him. The two intersected for Bryant's final NBA game in Philadelphia. On Sunday, Bryant said this would be his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team he jumped to directly from Lower Merion. Bryant held a news conference Tuesday before the game at the Wells Fargo Center against the 76ers. He was honored before the game and seemed to be enjoying the platitudes and renewing acquaintances.

When the 76ers were preparing for the 1995 draft, head coach and general manager John Lucas invited college stars to St. Joseph's University for private workouts, and there they found a skinny, young player against whom they were matched one-on-one. "Is he on your team?" one player asked Lucas after his workout, which ended badly for the prospective draftee. "No, son," Lucas said. "He's a junior in high school. " The pages that fall from the calendar form pathways that bend and twist as they flutter to the ground and land.

I DO NOT THINK Kobe Bryant will follow the script of former Los Angeles Lakers great Elgin Baylor. Nine games into the 1971-72 season, Baylor, then 37, evaluated his chronic knee issues and decided to call an end to his 13-year NBA career. One of the greatest scorers of his generation, Baylor, ironically, left the game during the season the Lakers won the NBA title he had relentlessly pursued in vain. Bryant has no such issues. A five-time NBA champion and 17-time All-Star with the Lakers, Bryant, 37, has a legacy that few players in NBA history can rival.
