You couldn't begrudge Lupe Fiasco for getting his braggadocio on at the Trocadero on Thursday night. Sure, the 25-year-old Chicago rapper - who was short-listed for GQ's man of the year, along with Jay-Z, Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore - was overstating the case when he described himself as "the most critically acclaimed artist in the world right now. " But he'd had a good day. Fiasco's debut disc, Food & Liquor, was nominated for three Grammys....

People are always questioning Lupe Fiasco's street cred. "They have the nerve to say, 'Why ain't you shootin' up no n- in your songs?' " the rapper told a packed house during a concert Sunday at the Baltimore club Sonar. " 'Why ain't you talkin' about pushin' no weight?' " (That's slang for dealing drugs.) " 'Why don't you do something for the 'hood? You just don't know how to dumb it down, do you?' " With that, Fiasco - who plays a sold-out show tonight at the Fillmore at the TLA - led his five-piece band into "Dumb It Down" from his sophomore album, The Cool.

Girls Last time, when the San Francisco duo of Christopher Owens and Chet "J.R. " White known as Girls released their debut album, Album , in 2009, they had plenty of backstory to introduce them. Owens spent his youth traveling the world in the Children of God cult, forbidden to listen to music made by outsiders. Yet he somehow emerged a startlingly sensitive songwriter whose music internalized the influences of the Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, and the Everly Brothers. Not that his story's old hat, but we move on to Father, Son, Holy Ghost, the second fuller and thickly produced Girls' album, which must get by on the merits of its music alone.

At 24, the cherubic, redheaded Ed Sheeran has shown dexterity as an artist and as a chart-topper, with a blend of folk and soul (occasionally tipped with hip-hop rhythms) with undeniable nods to American culture (example: his tune "The A-Team"). His affiliations further show his flexibility. He covered Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" during the 2012 Summer Olympics. He has cowritten several hits with One Direction, and he has toured with Taylor Swift. Sheeran has also worked with drum-and-bass god Goldie and weird rapper Lupe Fiasco.

Pop Miguel Kaleidoscope Dream (RCA ***1/2) One of the most heartening pop tends of the last year is the emergence of a new wave of falsetto-wielding soul men, more subtle than slick, who resist the urge to tidy up their unpolished electro arrangements - and make music all the more effectively human as a result. Going straight to the head of the class that also includes Frank Ocean and the Weeknd is dirty-minded-love man Miguel - last name, Pimentel - who comes into his own on his self-assured second album, Kaleidoscope Dream . The mixed-race Southern California songwriter, who has penned tunes for Usher, Asher Roth, and Musiq Soulchild, allows all sorts of elements to course through his music, whether he's pondering big questions in "Candles in the Sun" or calculating "How Many Drinks" will be required to attain his goal for the evening.

Subject of desire And the winner is . . . Katherine Heigl. The delectable Grey's Anatomy star was honored as "the most desirable woman of 2008" in an AskMen.com survey that drew five million votes. Readers were asked "to look beyond sex appeal and beauty to pick women who have the characteristics they value in a potential companion, like intelligence, humor, charisma and ambition. " If the respondents looked beyond appearances, they didn't look far. Dominating the poll's top 10 were three Victoria's Secrets models: Alessandra Ambrosio, Marisa Miller and Adriana Lima.

Of all the members of the Black Eyed Peas, Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson seemed the least likely to forge her own career. She always seemed like the fifth wheel, a cheerleader in a male-dominated group. But on her solo debut, Fergie comes out sexy and strong. The Dutchess (will.i.am/A&M Records . ) doesn't start auspiciously. The first track, "Fergalicious," a slice of old-school, beatbox hip-hop, sounds like a naked attempt to re-create Nelly Furtado's hit "Promiscuous. " But the album quickly hits its stride with keepers like the bumping club hit "London Bridge," a bodacious bomb worthy of Missy Elliott, and the bouncy ballad "All That I Got (The Make Up Song)

Great pop stars force their audiences to share their obsessions. For Kanye West, that means making people care about Kanye West as much as Kanye West does. That might seem like an impossible task for an artist as deeply preoccupied with his own tribulations as the famously self-involved Chicago rapper and producer. But on Saturday at the Susquehanna Bank Center (the Camden amphitheater formerly known as the Tweeter), West pretty much accomplished his mission with his Glow in the Dark tour, which featured a stellar undercard of Rihanna, N.E.R.
