I FIGURE I'm going to keep my clothes on for the next few movies," said Channing Tatum. And his fans around the world collectively weep. Tatum is the star of "Magic Mike," a/k/a the male stripper movie. Directed by auteur Steven Soderbergh, "Magic Mike" is based on Tatum's experiences as a stripper before he got into acting. Set at a Tampa, Fla., male revue, the movie stars Tatum as the titular Mike who recruits The Kid ("I Am Number Four's" Alex Pettyfer) into the sweaty, gyrating fold.

Never mind the scorching heat blanketing Atlantic City on this Saturday night. The real inferno was inside the Tropicana Casino's Planet Rose. Strippers were grinding, pumping, and pounding to the pulsating music. Bottles of booze were being guzzled, as dollar bills were stuffed into waistbands. Whistling and whooping, the crowd was on fire. A bunch of guffawing guys having their way? Hardly. Just girls gone wild, getting down-and-dirty, and lusting after the men in the SavageMania exotic male dancer show.

Despite all the horror, The Dark Knight Rises beggared all competition, with a whopping $161.1 million take, less than expected but remarkable under the circumstances, according to industry watchdog site ScreenRant. It's the best Batman debut ever (2008's The Dark Knight made $158 million)

BACK IN 2009, Hasbro followed its "Transformers" hits with another toy-based, hoo-rah extravaganza, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. " It was a junky, guilty pleasure, starring a cusp-of-fame Channing Tatum as team leader Duke, and the whole thing had the energy of a young recruit: eager to please, game for anything, immune to embarrassment. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," however, is the opposite. This botched sequel feels like a shellshock victim: flailing, screaming, inept and utterly incoherent.

"SESAME Street Live," reality TV, stripping for Jada Pinkett Smith. That's the strange but true path to success for "Magic Mike XXL" star Stephen "tWitch" Boss - he does the movie's climactic striptease with Channing Tatum - who grew up in Montgomery, Ala., a place known more for football than dance. "I tried sports, and it just wasn't my thing," said Boss, star and current street-dancers' team captain on "So You Think You Can Dance," and frequent guest DJ on daytime TV's "Ellen.

AFTER 20 YEARS in Hollywood, Matthew McConaughey is having a moment. Previously thought of as little more than a buff, pretty-boy actor who looked good in romantic comedies and without a shirt, McConaughey became a dad in 2008, turned 40 in 2009 and decided to get more serious about his craft and his career. Goodbye "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. " Hello "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Bernie," "Killer Joe," "The Paperboy," "Mud," "Magic Mike" and now "The Dallas Buyers Club. " Different character roles, interesting directors, studio films mixed with eclectic art-house fare.

How the heck did he get on that island? How long has he been there? How the heck did he get cigarettes? How did he get Beanie-Weenies?" Those are just a few of the urgent questions Matthew McConaughey had for Jeff Nichols once the actor had pored over the writer/director's screenplay, Mud , and signed on to play the title role - a fugitive wanted for murder hiding out on a deserted island in the middle of the Mississippi, down Arkansas...

When you hear the sound of thunder, Don't you get too scared. Just grab your thunder buddy And say these magic words . . . Of course, I can't write those magic words in this newspaper. But if you saw Seth (future Oscar host) MacFarlane's brilliantly funny, filthy Ted , you probably remember how the rest goes. I wrestled long and hard with whether to put the Mark Wahlberg-and-his-cussin'-plush-toy comedy on my Top 10 list. In the end, even with fond memories of Mila Kunis' straight-faced aplomb, Norah Jones' inspired cameo, and the hooker-poop scene, the hard-R romp didn't make the cut. It was that good a year.

I DON'T KNOW what's gotten into Matthew McConaughey lately, but I'm glad it's in there. The famously laid back actor had gotten a little too laid back in recent years — fully reclined, perhaps half asleep, not terribly "present," as actors like to say. He bounced back last year with "The Lincoln Lawyer," was good again as the exasperated district attorney in Richard Linklater's "Bernie," and in "Magic Mike," more "on" than he'd been in...
