NOTE TO DIRECTORS: When you cast Marion Cotillard in your movie, you can get rid of all the dialogue related to how beautiful she is. The camera has already told us everything we need to know. So it's highly redundant when all the men gush about her in "The Immigrant," cast as Ewa, a Polish woman fleeing her war-ravaged country for (she imagines) a better life with relatives in the United States. Those dreams don't survive the journey across the Atlantic. At Ellis Island, we hear references to an incident aboard ship that threatens Ewa's chances at citizenship, and she's immediately separated from her sister, who has TB. She's ticketed for deportation, but spotted by a fellow named Bruno Weiss, who bills himself as a representative of "Traveller's Aid Society.

Marion Cotillard won the best actress Academy Award in 2007 for her performance as the iconic chanteuse Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose . It's highly likely that Cotillard, who has managed to work both sides of the Atlantic - in her native France and in Hollywood - will be nominated again in January, for her work in an altogether different sort of French film, Jacques Audiard's Rust and Bone. As a Marineland whale trainer who experiences a catastrophic accident, leaving her a double amputee, Cotillard brings riveting emotional authenticity to the sort of role that is easy to overplay, to sentimentalize.

In Contagion , the fast, frightening global pandemic drama opening Friday, Jude Law is a mad blogger, a Web journo whose raging posts against Big Pharm and Big Gov turn incendiary when people start dropping like flies. Is Law's Alan Krumwiede (pronounced crum-woody ) prophet or paranoiac? A voice of sanity in the chaos and dread, or a nutter? "I love that it's left open for you to decide," says Law, who clearly had a ball playing this hustling Bay Area Brit, a giant thorn in the side of health officials trying to stanch the panic, and trying to find a vaccine.
